2012 x5 with flood damage /rebuilt title

Hi All!

I've owned a couple BMW M3s and still have an e92 M3 now. But i'm looking at buying a 2012 Bmw x5 3.5xi with 83k miles. He's asking $13.5k but i'm looking to offer him $11k and start from there. Here's a link to the listing.

It has a rebuilt title from PA for slight flood damage from the dealership. He says that the dealership declare it a total lost, but it didn't actually get any water damage. He doesn't have any proofs of it, so i'll take what he says for what it is.

My question is, how reliable are bmw x5 in general and should i be looking out for anything that might go wrong with the year and mileage it has. Water damage aside.

I'm looking for a daily driver to use for the next year or two before upgrading to the new Porsche Macan. Would love to get your feedback and pointers.

I won't do it especially with that kind of title. For $13K, you can get an X5 with similar mileage and clear title. It's no brainer. It can be a headache during your ownership and it will be a headache when you resell it.

I saw this ad three days ago was tempted to go check it out. It looks beautiful color and well maintained inside. Its only couple of hours drive from me. It is worth checking out. Pay a BMW dealer for a comprehensive inspection and then buy it .

I think the price is too high. That is a salvage title and subject to extreme depreciation. Some insurance companies won't insure it and you may not be able to get a bank loan. If you want if that bad and pay cash I'd start with $5k.

I agree, there are many non salvage titles out there at that price. The only reason to touch a salvage car is if there are none available except that one or it is less than half the price of the ones that are available.

On your question of reliability. No, they are not reliable. With that expectation set, you can get great reliability out of them if you treat them well and maintain them well. For this car you have no visibility of its history, not a good start. Things do go wrong, sometimes big things. My general view is the more expensive a car was when new, the less reliable it will be at 150k miles.

seller states "very clean" yet there is 3 months of brake dust on the wheels...

Why bother with a flood car? Your arb isn't even that big...

Don't buy a flooded car, and don't ever buy a flooded German unreliable car. I used to be a salvage dealer and would not buy a car with water inside.

And if you are asking the dumb question of what are the common issues, then you really should not buy a BMW. In this day and age, these soon many e series threads, N55 threads, and YouTube videos.

I paid $13.5 for a 2007 4.8 w 42k on it.

Price seems a bit high for a compromised title. I bought a 2011 X35D with a clean title fully loaded with the sport package and similar miles for $14k about a year ago. Spend some time shopping around and I'm sure you can find a better deal.

A branded title car should sell for 20%-40% less than market value. You will take at least that much hit when you try and sell it.

The price is too high for a salavage title vehicle. Also get an inspection.

I bought a branded title car once and I knew the issues I was getting. Only worth it if you get a big discount, as your gonna eat it at trade in. P.s. I did a manufacturer buy back car that was still under warranty.
