2012 5.0 with 50k - quart of oil every 500 miles!

Is this normal? I've owned the car since new, and its been meticulously cared for, serviced only at the dealership, all the recall work has been performed.

My daughter has been driving the car for a few years, and as of late she's having to add a quart every 500 miles or so. I know these engines are notorious for burning oil, but this seems excessive.

I have the same X5. With only 50K on the clock that is a bit premature for that level of oil burning. If it is driven in alot of stop-and-go traffic that can greatly accelerate the wear.

Three main Culprits here in order of what you should replace first: CCV Tubes, Your Valve guide seals, and your Turbo Oil return lines.

Ask your service rep to perform the oil burn test, I believe with your low of miles they will cover all the repairs under BMW extended warranty (not 100% sure on that so dont quote me but worth looking into ). If for some reason they wont, follow the directions below:

Start off with replacing all of your Crank Case Ventilation lines. If still excessive oil burning then next up is having your valve guide seals replaced. Parts are cheap (less then 200, Labor will kill you, around 3000+).

Turbo oil return lines can get blocked too in these engines, however this normally burns even more oil at a quart every 100 miles or so but I recommend having them replaced also when doing the valve guide seals since everything will be torn down anyway.

I probably received it and threw it out. Gotta research this, I will call my service adviser tomorrow and ask.

Are you aware of the N63 CCP (customer care package)? Hopefully you caught wind of that, it's about 4 years old now. Essentially a BMW recall which covers a slew of engine parts.

Surely you must have seen the multiple threads on here about the infamous Valve Guide Seals?
Give your Service Advisor re: valve stem seals lawsuit. I didn't need ANY of my lawsuit papers I got in the mail; they are doing so many of these I think they decided to just check for the telltale smoke, and schedule the work.

For reference... My V8 had 58k miles and I was adding about a qt every 800 miles. I did the self-test - let it idle ~3 mins and then floor it and look for the smoke in the exhaust - and it was smokey alright. I had them look at it in July, they agreed it needed the job, and did the work in one week. No paperwork, no hassle. No issues since, and no oil added since either.
This work was FREE of Charge.

Good luck!

Yes, I did the CCP back in 2015 with only 17k on the clock. The car was constantly displaying CEL and going into limp mode before it.

Idle for 3 minutes from cold start or with warm engine?

Floor it in neutral, or have someone drive it while you observe?

With that being said, do you trust the dealer with such an invasive procedure? If they mess something else in the process, maybe its just easier to keep adding oil?

My 50i needs a quart every 1000 miles. I just keep adding a quart which costs 6-$.

I don't want to mess up a perfectly running factory installed engine

my 2011 50i was burning 1q / 500miles, i got engine replaced under the Bang vs. BMW Class Action at BMW Brooklyn. I paid 15%( i had 60k miles) of the cost which was ~$1,900.
I had to wait 5 months for the replacement engine.

I actually spoke to my service adviser today, I might opt for it as well.

There should be a class action on the 2012 X5 transfer case issues as well.

My transfer case was replaced under warranty, along with a bunch of other stuff.

If I do go ahead with the engine replacement under the warranty, my car will effectively cost more in warranty repairs than what I paid for it.

The car threw a CEL today, that went away after restarting, and there is a strong sulfur smell out of the exhaust when it idles. The spark plugs were replaced fairly recent, and it had the injectors recall.

The dealer said I am approved for valve seals replacement job, not full engine repair. Don't know if I should trust them with the job.

What a coincidence. My 2011 X5 50i is at the dealer for valve seal replacement

Its at 115k miles.

I am the third owner still it was approved for valve seals replacement at NO cost to me.

My Service Adviser is a nice young chap. He told me they can do a lot of OTHER stuff at very cheap labor rates as the engine is pulled down for the Valve seals.

So I am taking advantage of the cheaper labor and replacing all the suspension control arms and ball joints . Also replacing Aux water pump and Thermostats.

Also replacing all the turbo return lines and coolant hoses.

Replacing coolant reservoir and power steering reservoir.

Plus I get a brand new 2020 X5 as a loaner for two weeks .

WIN WIN

Any dealer can do it so if you don't like this dealer or think they are shady, highly recommend you find one your comfortable with. And like X5MAN posted, now would be the time to have them replace the turbo cooling lines and the CCV lines.

For example, the drivers side CCV tube will cost you about 400-500 dollars to have replaced by the dealer without the engine out. With it out it should only cost you the price of the part (80.00)and maybe 10min of labor as you can litteraly replace it in a few minutes. Same with the turbo cooling lines.

Have them replace all your vaccum lines and possibly water pump too and have been replace the turbo auxiliary water pump (under recall) while they are in there. You will save thousands doing it now and make the engine worry free for years.

Don't forget to ask for the "N63" discount on the parts. Seriously, most dealers will knock 10-30 percent off the cost of parts if you just ask.

N63 discounts work for other E70 also. I just put the N63 105ah AGM battery in my diesel for $200!

The dealer is working on the car. The CEL was due to Vanos solenoid, they are replacing it with just the cost of the part, no labor since its taken apart.

They quoted me $1600 to replace coolant return lines while they are at it. Expensive but I approved it.

I am scheduled to bring my car into the dealer service for a battery issue and a recent engine malfunction warning that has not reappeared yet.

Any suggestions for me going into the dealer for service with this car? I am looking into the battery service recall and maybe the valve seals if available to me.

I am going to BMW in Colorado Springs, CO and will be getting a loaner vehicle as well.

Could you give an idea to the cost for all of the extra work you are getting done with the valve seal job?

Thanks - PG
