High Coolant Temp on Start
So as of a few days ago, when starting my X, I receive the "hot coolant temp" warning in iDrive. Now I know this isn't the case, as it will come on when I start the X after letting it cold soak an entire night, and the ambient temperature will be right around 60 degrees.
I did some searching and believe I may have a bad aux pump, or turbo coolant pump, I have a question, is there any troubleshooting on this item? I will try and pull codes at some point today, but we shall see. thanks

What sensor would only code after restart? In all my years of experience getting paid to diagnose and repair things, I have never had a sensor that would read a high reading on start, then fall to normal after 30-45 seconds of running, so thank you for the input, but I believe that may not be correct.
What I believe may be going on, is that the X will be shut down, command for what ever pump runs once the engine shuts down, then the pump will not perform as well as it should, then the ECM will see a high temp, and set a code. So after sitting a little, the X goes to sleep. I go to it after a certain amount of time, start the truck up, and the code pops up instantly. Then once the ECM knows everything is ok, the engine is not hot, it will go away, and everything will go on just fine, no issues. The aux pump seems to cost around $70 and I see that two other people have had this exact problem, and both times, this pump was to blame. I may just toss it on the truck, and see if that fixes it with no diagnostics at all, as my explanation seems to make sense, at least in my own head. Someone may chime in and tell me I am wrong, and I very well may be.

So to update this old thread, I think the coolant temp spiked a little higher then it should have one time, and then the soft code never went away. I reset the code with my scanner and have not seen the warning since. The electric pump is working as it should and everything is normal temp wise.

My X5 started doing the same thing recently. I had a code stored for Turbo Coolant Pump. Replaced it for $75 and all is well.
The replacement is pretty easy, you'll need two new hose clamps since your have to destroy the OEM ones. Took me about 1.5 hours. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...p/11517629916/ |

my code never came back, it was stuck for some reason. The pump was/has been running fine, it set the code and I assume for some reason my X5 just couldn't get rid of it, no idea why. Once I cleared it with my scanner all is well.

Mine was also similar. Popped the code stayed on for a while the. I erased it and I went another 2 months.
Might consider just having the part handy. If you drive it moderately then park with the engine off You can open the hood and feel the vibration on the inter coolers expansion tank. It should be running then. |

I can hear my aux pump run with the key off, so I think I will be fine. No sense in fixing what isn't broken.
