2013 X5 35d - Whining Noise

I have a 2013 X5 35d that has a whining noise coming from the front of the engine bay. Sounds like a power steering whine, but the noise occurs with acceleration either driving or in park. So I'm fairly certain it isn't a power steering issue, as there are no leaks and it doesn't make the noise when the wheel is turned. The more I research it, I'm thinking its a pulley issue. I haven't had the factory recall idler pulley bolt issue corrected as of yet, but hope to do so this week.

Do you all think it is a pulley issue as well? When the dealership performs the recall repair, would they replace the idler pulley as well? Could it be argued that if the recall wasn't necessary the pulley wouldn't be doing this at 75K miles? Is replacing the idler pulley on this vehicle fairly simple for a DYI'er. I'm fairly adept at working on vehicles. Y'alls help and feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Turn off your AC and see if the noise goes away. The snowflake button. During the recall they replace the idler/deflection pulley. The tensioner pulley is not replaced.

I will check this out today after work. If the noise does go away, what would this indicate?

It is just another clue as to where the noise is coming from. My E90 has had a whine from the AC compressor for the past 3 years. The best way to find a noise like that is with a mechanics stethoscope.

Okay, I checked it out yesterday, and the noise occurs with or without the AC turned on. The noise is directly proportional to the RPM/Acceleration. As I engage the throttle the noise gets louder. You can't really hear it at a dead stop idle.

I've scheduled the idler pulley bolt recall repair for tomorrow. So hopefully the pulley that is replaced with that process is the one that is causing the noise.

Excellent news to report. The car god's were in my favor today. I had the idler pulley bolt recall repair done today, and with that and the pulley being replaced the annoying whining noise went away. What are the odds.

Do you by any chance have a video of the noise?! I have an acceleration related whine, but Iit seems to be in conjunction with the turbo spool. That also related to load, so I suppose it COULD be a pulley.

I don't have a video of my vehicle, but I've attached a video link below from youtube. The whine you here at the beginning of the video is what mine sounded like. I was told by the dealer that for my vehicle the reason the recall was ordered is because the idler pulley bolt was over torqued from the factory, and in my case that may have caused the bearing to prematurely wear out. Hopefully this video will help you out. It's the best one I could find that had the same whine as I had.

Could an X5 35i have the same issue?

Potentially, yes. Any vehicle could have this issue. Pulleys are going to go bad eventually and with enough miles. I was just lucky that my vehicle had a recall on the pulley that was having the issue.
