Lots of iron in my X5M oil. Next steps?

Recent Blackstone analysis after 9 months and 6500 miles found 70ppm of iron, and that's in addition to the thin dark paste on the magnetic drain plug. Metals were ok except for that. Universal average reported by them for iron is 17ppm (@5500 mile interval).

My 110k mile 2011 X5M otherwise seems fine right now. I *just* had the vacuum pump replaced- which was first identified as leaking in ~May and ~3k miles ago. Oil consumption has been approximately 1qt every 2k miles.

What would you do if you owned this vehicle? Anything right now? Wait for the next change in ~4k miles to see what Blackstone sees? Something else?

Thanks for any wisdom you're willing to share!

Are you running aftermarket filters such as KNN? They are known for increased numbers.

I would change oil and retest a 5k miles. I am about to send mine in shortly.

OE filters, or equivalent at least, for air and oil.

What did Blackstone say about the source of Iron?

They didn't guess about the source. I found an online article suggesting rings, pistons, rods, crank, oil pump, and cam shaft (maybe others) as common iron sources. Nothing definite, and couldn't find anything specific to the S63 engine either.

I did an oil analysis when I first got the X5M and the iron levels were high. They didn't think there was an issue since other analysis points looked fine. The iron levels have been fine since then.

Maybe try a shorter oil change interval and see what the next analysis says.

Definitely the plan. Going for 4k on this one. Thanks for your input.
