E70 (2008 X5) transmission issue or what?

I was taking my little dog to PetsMart. A pick up in front of me stalled. A row of cars were behind me spaced, it seemed, like 2 inches apart.

I put the lever in reverse to indicate we needed to get out of line to get around. Nobody was moving. When I moved the lever again I saw the first of several error messages.

I think the first one was something about 4x4. Then the next message I remember was something about the transmission.

I eventually got to PetsMart that was one block away. I got a warning about not being able to get the lever in Park. So I had the lever in drive and turned off the engine.

As I did this another message said that perhaps restarting the car would resolve my issues.

I returned to the vehicle maybe 10 minutes later. I could not get the engine to start. I do not remember seeing any new error messages or icons.

I am inclined to tow to an independent shop that does BMWs and see what they turn up. Does anyone see anything here that indicates I should take it to the dealer?

After I started this thread, I went back to the car to have it towed. While waiting for the tow truck, I called BMW and described what had happened.

So the last time I tried to start the car, I got a battery warning. When the tow truck came, he was finally able to jump start the car but it would not keep running so he used a portable unit to keep inside the hood while he put my car on top of his truck.

I decided to start with the dealer since they know my record of 5 X5s from them. If this is just a battery then not much to worry about. If it is more serious, then I will look at towing the car over to the independent dealer I want to use who is roughly 1 mile from my dealer.
