Googone's 2013 X5 Gray Oil Burner Build
Has guys, I just picked up a 2013 X5 35d Platinum Gray Metallic, Black Nevada, Heated Sport steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, active driver seat, multi-contour front seats, heated rear seats, 3rd row seat, pano roof, NAV, adaptive headlights with full LED LCI package, rear window sun shades, etc. Brand new Weathertech liners, brand new Michelin tires, brand new front brake rotors and pads, and fresh fluids and filters. I haven't taken delivery of it yet, but my shipper is going to grab it for me next week.
Already ordered a set of new staggered 310m reps 22x10, 22x11. I have a couple emails out to some people in Europe to score some Continental Sportcontact 6's in the 295/30/22, 335/25/22 sizes. These tires are a PITA to try to source right now. Ordered the OEM fender flare kit, ordered a set of H&R 2" lowering springs, and I will be ordering gloss black grills, and the OEM Aero Kit. I have many plans beyond that, but it will take some time to get to anything more than that immediately. Most of my energy will be going into properly detailing the vehicle, and creating a proper baseline. Finally to my question. Can I remove the factory flat black door moldings? Not sure if these have clips adjusted to the car or not. I am really looking to create a super slippery OEM plus look to the vehicle. I debadge everything I own, and I really like to keep things clean and detailed. Last edited by Googone20; 04-13-2017 at 09:01 AM.. |

Congrats on the purchase. I too have a platinum gray 35d very similarly equipped so I'll be curious to see your progress. I'd highly recommend ordering up painted reflectors and front grills from IND. Definitely cleans up the look especially if you are going for a sleek look.
My understanding is that there is an indention in the door for the moulding so best solution is to paint them. |

I already ordered gloss black grills. I decided to try a set of double slat grills similar to the newer ///M car grills. I talked to a few other forum members who have them, and have hopefully narrowed down a decent set of them. My car is scheduled to be delivered to me tomorrow. My new wheels and tires are here at my house. I am hoping to have them possibly mounted and balanced tomorrow. My OEM wide body flares have arrived, and are ready to be installed. I also received my 2" H&R lowering kit from Tire Rack. I ordered a 83mm wheel stud kit from Ryan at Motorsports Hardware. Always had great luck with his stuff, so I wanted to support him again. Tomorrow I think I will order 15mm front, and 20mm rear spacers from ECS, along with an OEM LCI Aero Kit. I ended up having to go with the Lionhart tires. I really wanted to go with the Continental Sportcontact 6's, but I was unable to find a vendor that would ship them to me for a reasonable rate. I had actually placed a order for the Pirelli Scorpions. The order intially went through, and then 3 days later told me they were on national back order. The very vendors that actually have any stock of the 335/25/22 rears, are asking $600 a tire. I figure I'll test out these cheap Lionhart's, and if they work out great, it will be a plus. If they don't, I will be able to report back to you guys and hopefully report back why.
At least we all will know what they are are at that point. The entire point of my build is a solid daily driver that is good on gas. I needed something larger due the fact I now have 4 kids, and my 2 oldest daughters are involved in sports. This requires me to haul around equipment, bags, and other gear. Just wasn't going to cut it in my ATS-V. My wife has a Hybrid Tahoe, which has been a great car for us for the last 4-5 years. Its great to pile all the kids into for a long drive. The Tahoe is very smooth and quiet with the electric assist. Its just not a car I want to drive on the daily to work. Lol. Too large, and not me. I will definitely be spending a lot of time on my 35d to get it up to my standards. Detailing, sealing, preventative maintenance. The car is coming to me with a full 50k mile BMW service that was just done. It also just had the EGR cooler replaced, and that has a full 2 year warranty on it. I am sure I will be very tempted to go the full delete route here soon. I would love the extra power, extra sound, and extra fuel economy. Michigan does not require any emission testing or inspections, so I am free to do whatever. I just need to educate myself more with this process, and how I want to go about it. My 2013 E70 finally arrived Thursday. I was very happy to find have it, and immediately set to work to transform this into my vision of my ultimate daily driver. I was very disappointed in the condition that the car arrived in. Was not expecting to have to clean up what I did when I received the car. Here are all of the before pictures.
Untitled by googone20 What the heck is this spot from?? Luckily it cleaned right off and looks like brand new now. You can also see how dirty the steering wheel leather was, and the rest of the seats need a good cleaning to remove dyes and oils from clothes and skin. Clean leather reveals a nice matte look behind.

I immediately went to work cleaning my new car. I was shocked how dirty the wheels really were once I started to allow the wheel cleaner to activate. I applied Adam's wheel cleaner to the wheels and many of the lower surfaces to start pulling out iron and brake dust particles. You can see how much was actually on the car.
Missed a small spot at the top, but that was addressed during the full wash. At this point I decided to debadge the car. The X5 badge on the rear hatch, and both sets of badges on the front doors were completely removed. I used a heat gun, fishing line, and my 3M eraser wheel to remove all remains. The entire car was then given a strip bath in Dawn. This was followed by a round with the clay bar on every panel and surface. Then I washed the car completely with Dawn again. At this point, the car exterior is completely stripped and clean. I now have a base point to work with. I ran out of light while washing, so I only have pictures indoors at this point. That completed Thursday, which was my first day of ownership. Friday morning started bright and early. I ran my wheels and tires up to the shop to have TPMS's installed, and for them to be mounted and balanced. I also rented a spring compressor while I was out. Friday's agenda was to get the car looking more aggressive. Backed it out of the garage all nice and clean. Last time it will look stock again. Lol!! Front plate holder delete to clean up the front end. I decided to try out these newer style double fin grills in gloss black. Time to drop this thing down a couple inches! Figured this was also a great time to swap out the fender flares to the brand new OEM wide body flares I bought. Obviously I took my time with each step, and spent some time cleaning each surface as I went. Much better!! Springs out. Decided to trim the bump stops a bit to allow more suspension travel without bottoming out. I went with the H&R 2" kit, so I was worried it would have issues crashing under full compression. I have to say, my car rides and performs excellent. I am very surprised others have stated this kit rode so bad. My car barely feels ant different than stock, but is more planted and tighter feeling in the turns. Things cleaned up underneath, and new springs are installed. I then installed my 83mm bullet nose wheel stud kit from Motorsport Hardware. For some reason I didn't take any photos of it going on, but I will get some when my spacers arrive and get installed. This concluded what I was able to accomplish on day 2 of ownership. I didn't get the rear lowering links installed, but those will be on the list for Saturday. Here are a couple pictures at the end of Friday.

Day 3: Saturday. My number one objective of Saturday was to remove the horrid pinstriping that had been done to the car. This things were on the car damn good too. I tried Laquer Thinner, but that literally did nothing. I tried oven cleaner, and that did basically nothing. Even tried letting it sit for extended periods of time, and still nothing.
After trying several different things, I found the only way to get rid of them was with my orbital and Meg's 105. I used a orange foam cutting pad. I had to let a lot of heat build up in order to flatten the pinstripe out, and eventually it disappeared once you got down to the clear. This process took some time, as they still did not want to come off easily. After I finally got all the nasty pinstripes off, I installed the rear lowering links. Not fully settled yet. I may go a little lower in the rear. Final pictures after driving around a bit. My spacers and my OEM Aero Kit are being shipped to me this week from ECS Tuning. Should be throwing both on asap. I'll fit the kit first, and then take the lips back off to have them painted by my favorite body shop. I am also going to get a quote for the front bumper including painting the reflectors. This way it will be a perfect match to the bumper, and I can also have them fill the holes that were drilled for the front plate mount. I will also probably have them do a couple touch-ups, and wet sand and cut the entire car. We will see what the quote is, and if I feel motivated enough to do it myself.

Great job!
When I got my X I did the same immediate changes. I just got H&R springs and was thinking of tackling this on my own. How hard was it? There is no DIY online anywhere. Any help is appreciated. |

It was pretty straight forward. I had to compress the springs to make enough space to slip them out of the lower mount. That was honestly the hardest part of the job. It's always one of those things where the first side takes 1.5-2 hours, and the second side takes 30 mins.
I spent a few minutes tonight, and adjusted my rear a little lower to remove the rake. Car looks much better now. I'll get it cleaned up this weekend, and take some nice pictures.

Looks so much better! Great choice of mods so far, looking forward to see the aero kit, I always liked those.
Good call on the painting the front reflectors, that was one of the first things I did. |

Got a few more things done to the car this week. Spacers finally got installed. Was surprised how bad the car needed them even with the aftermarket wheels and wide meats. Went with 15mm fronts, and 20mm rears. Both were good sizes. Honestly the rear could take a 25mm spacer, but ill stick with the 20mm for now. I definately need to refinish my rotors and calipers with some paint. Both bother me when I look at my new wheels and tires. This will be high up on my to-do list.
Decided to swap out my center caps that came with my wheels for the nicer domed OEM caps. Interior and Exterior as it currently sits. Springs have settled in a little bit more, and I have adjusted the rear down a bit more. I am happy with the current height and ride. I may still decided to go with coilovers in the future, but that will depend if some new choices become available and such. I received my OEM LCI Aero Kit also. Started to put that on also, but I think I have a issue with my rear diffuser. The finish on it is inconsistent, so I am going to contact ECS and see if they can replace it. I really like the look of it though.

LCI aero kits looks so good!
Any thoughts on swapping out those exhaust tips for something more aggressive looking to match the other changes you've made? |

Yes, I do plan on doing larger tips at some point. I really like the 120mm Supersprint versions. I am thinking I'll hold off until I do all of the exhaust along with the necessary tuning. I eventually want to do the deletes and open up all the potential of the motor.

Yes, I went through so many cars before I found a car optioned the way I wanted. I was happy that I found one in Platinum Gray Metallic also, as that was my first choice.

Finally had a few minutes to mock up my OEM LCI Aero Kit. The fitment was really good, but I question these screws that are just into the plastic in many spots. It seems rock solid, but I guess I expected it would mount slightly different. It is only in primer right now, but I am pulling it off to have it all painted next week. I also painted the front bumper reflectors and the lower side grill strips with Plasti-Dip as a temporary solution until I have the entire front bumper done. I like having the reflectors and bumper done at the same time, because I can always tell the color difference between the two, and that drives me crazy. Honestly, the Plasti-Dip looks pretty nice even in person. I used my heat gun to cure the paint, so it dried very smooth and uniform. It looks a thousand times better without the ambers. Definitely going to be doing LED bulbs and coding next. Need to eliminate the egg yolks in the corners, and also want to match the fogs to the HID's. Figuring I'll probably be doing Osram CBI's, maybe upgrade the stock ballasts to 50w, then try to match a bulb in the fogs to the CBI's 5500k hue. It may be better to run LED's in the fogs due to the fade in and out when cornering. Here are the most current pictures.
I am looking into doing a full touch-up, wet sand, paint correction, and polish in the next couple of months. You can probably tell I have been working on the paint already, but it's not anywhere near as nice as it could be. I think I can take it to a really high level with some more time and elbow grease.
