over 2.0bar is quite a big pressure on a petrol engine.. Merc is flying in recent 2-3 years..

It was a huge deal when they were able to get over 50% thermal efficiency with their F1 PU's. There's a reason they are killing it in F1 year after year.

It's great when brand new but how durable or problematic will it be once the warranty runs out?

Give me a lazy 3.0L inline 6 any day.

BMW was doing it in 1977:

The 1977 320 Turbo used a massively turbocharged 2.0-liter Formula 2 M12 powerplant. BMW figured these things to be putting out 650 hp, pretty outrageous for a four-cylinder, even today. These engines spurred on the development of BMW's turbocharged F1 cars of the 1980s, and the technological arms race that ensued is legendary.

Apples and oranges. Racer tuners have always been pumping up race engines so they may last for a race before being rebuilt. Lots of cars in those classes were boosted up past 600hp.

Not the same as making a production vehicle.

4g63 iron blocks were making 400 LONG before modern direct infection and sophisticated engine control
I had a dsm running a GM MAF with a MAF translator and a s-AFC for crying out
MHI big 16g and 26psi making more than 400 in the early 2000s
Ran that in the street over 4 yrs and 28k miles

So it had a nice warranty and met emissions standards?

this is the most powerful factory-made four-cylinder engine offered in a production vehicle.. otherwise there was an engine BMW had 1.5L turbocharged produces 1500hp but they had to rebuild it after qualifying 40 years ago.. its not the same thing.. only thing is Evo X had an FQ440 that pushes 440hp but nobody talks about it.. i guess because of the unit limitation.. if A45 could turn that d be a perfect car really..

That what people fail to realize when they talk about older engines being able to make more power.

Passed smog every single year
Was a used car so warranty did not apply
Btw if it broke down it won't cost my left but to repair
Warranty is good and dandy but have you sat down and thought about the horrendous reliability if the Merc AFTER it's warranty expires

So in other words you barely used it, in one limited situation.

Passing Smog test is not same thing as meeting new standard every year... otherwise the euro version Z4 could make 380hp as well

This is my favorite line of the article.

"Like other AMG engines, the M139 is hand-built by a single specially trained technician as part of AMG's "One Man, One Engine" philosophy (the name persists despite the fact that AMG employs female engine assemblers)."

Who cares? WTF does this have to do with anything? I see the SJW have infiltrated car magazines now. Ruined the whole article with this BS.

Drive a CLA 45 or GLA 45 on a hot day and you can answer this one. Bring a book, you'll need it as you wait for the boost and that awful transmission.
