What is the longest you've owned a car for?

What's the longest you've owned a car for? Do you plan on keeping it forever? Have you ever bought a car planning on keeping it forever, only to sell it later on? If so, why? Was it worth it?

I change cars often. Longest I ever had a car was a little over 5 yrs. Previous longest was a little over 3 yrs. The 5 year car was my 2nd Mazdaspeed6. Should have kept the 1st! I planned to keep it forever, but I sold it when I was up to 4 cars & it just sat. I don't regret the sale.

Longest car I owned was my 88 M3. I bought it for cheap in 05 as a project and never expected to sell it. Prices shot up and I sold it off once important parts started becoming NLA or stupidly expensive, and the owners went from drivers to hard parkers.

I drove the last brand new car that I bought home from the dealership (in the snow!) twenty years ago this month. In 5 years, it will qualify for historic plates! Has only 103K miles on it, and spends 99% of its time locked up in the enclosed race car hauler these days.

I bought a two year old Dodge Ram Cummins diesel 4x4 6-speed in 2008, and it was my daily driver for 11 years. Keep them in clean/fresh fuel, and those engines are bulletproof lifetime investments. I am only driving it on road trips and in the snow/ice now, and have no plans to part with it any time soon.

My current daily driver is the BMW i3, which I purchased as a lifetime keeper thanks to the carbon fiber and plastic chassis construction.....

Kept my '00 323it for 13 years. Sold it last year to my brother for his daughter to learn to drive stick.

Still have the '08 QX56 I bought new in summer of '07. 68k miles on it. No sale in sight.

Bought my wife an '09 528i in January 2010. She won't let me replace it.

Just shipped off the '04 G35 sedan last week. It was bought in late 2003, so just over 16 years old. I usually average about 8-10 years and 110-150k in mileage per car I've owned.

None have been bought thinking I'd keep it forever, aside from the F80 - they were good cars but at certain point there was something newer, better and cheaper to maintain and none, with the exception of my Integra GS-R, were destined to become future classics.

I had my 350z for 10 years. Had full intention of keeping it and making it into a track toy. I miss that thing. It was fun. I had 2 other cars during that time and sold both.

^ Just sold my 03 G35 after 6 years of ownership. Super sad to see her go, but honestly lost interest. She had some rust in the rear quarters, and my 21 year old self cut and welded it and put flares on it, RUINED. I will probably end up picking up another VQ down the line, most likely for a drift car.

1994 Z28. I bought it used and held on to it for 15 years. Sold it when I bought my 135i.

2004 ZX-10R. Bought new and still have it. So 16+ years and counting.

Darn our younger selves. I did some "aesthetic" things to the interior of the Z when I was young and regretted it later. Luckily the guy that bought it was into it.

I definitely agree with you on picking up another later. Drift car or autocross purposes.

3 years was the most. As you can see from my signature, cars don't live a long life in my driveway. I've owned 20 cars in 22 years of driving (yes my wife hates me lol).

Still have my 2007 Z4 that I bought nearly 13 years ago now. Plan on keeping it forever. I also still have my 2008 R6 that is now going on 12 years, that is not likely to be a forever vehicle though.

I bought my 350Z brand new in 2006 with the plan on owning it for at least 10 years. I got rid of it about a month ago. However, i gave it to my father in law with the stipulation that he had to let me know if he ever wanted to get rid of it, so it's still in my family. I'd happily own it until the end of time, but I live in the city and don't have space for more than one car.

The M2c is in the same boat as the Z was when I first bought it. I'd like to keep it for a good long time, possibly forever.

in 2005, I bought one of the very few Honda Element's that came in a MT. I **LOVE** that truck. Mountain biking, snow boarding, camping, pulling motorcycles cross-country-- it just goes and goes and goes-- I'm never getting rid of it. Rebuilt the entire suspension last fall. Doing some "housekeeping" on it when the weather warms up a bit more (door seals, replace seat cushion, a few trim pieces, etc.).

It will be 14 years this February. 2006 Subaru STI.
Still love the car, 110k miles and still runs like a bat out of hell.

Had to change some parts to get it to smog, like the FMIC back to top mount and will swap the stock catted downpipe in for the (California) smog check next month and then it is getting sold. Will miss the 420 AWHP but am looking forward to a more comfortable car that my wife will actually ride in.

Next car, 11through13 135i (or is if I can find the right one).

Oh, and... 1st post here

I generally buy vehicles new, or nearly new, with the intent of driving them until they turn into dust.

Two vehicles stayed with us for 14 years.

- 1989 Ford F-150, bought it new and drove it 234k miles and donated it for a tax deduction 14 years later, in running condition but needing a lot of work to keep going
- 2005 Toyota 4Runner, leased it from new, then bought it, ultimately put 206k on it, and sold it for a good price last fall, in excellent condition mechanically and cosmetically
