Are there transfer case problems with E70 X5 platform?
I have searched thoroughly but I couldn't find an answer.
Are there reported issues with transfer case on the E70 X5? and how do you tell if my car has this problem or not? All results on my search are just pointing to F30 platform (3 series). |

I have a 2011 E70 (xdrive35i) that came to me with transfer case problems...at slow speeds (parking lots) it would keep the front wheels at the same speed, so would shudder when turning (it is supposed to disengage the front wheels completely at slow speeds).
Changing the transfer case fluid and and resetting the TC adaptations solved it for me. |

My 2012 exhibited some "crabbing" of tires when turned sharp in a parking deck (guessing same as the poster above calls shudder - basically not smooth rotation). I mentioned it to the dealer at a service visit and they confirmed and replaced the entire Transfer Case under warranty. This was at about ~50k miles.
The crazy thing is, 7-8k miles later, I swear that I can feel a little bit of the same thing with the new transfer case already.... Maybe its nothing...? lol

Assuming he was guessing since the transfer case was not working properly and so must have not been adjusting the wheels for turning radius. Which is the phenomena/feeling I called "crabbing". I have no recollection where I got that term from...

It's basically the same thing... if the transfer case is locked, the wheels turn at the same speed, so when the car turns and one of the wheels needs to turn faster than the other, it kind of shudders (or crabs...I like that) as one of the tires keeps trying to catch up with the other one. Even if that's not exactly what is happening, if your problem is shuddering/crabbing at slow speeds when you turn, chances are it's the transfer case. |

Sorry to hear about your issues, I have a brand new BMW transfer case for sale, if It could help.
It was purchased with oversight and doesn't fit in my 6 cylinder truck. I also put in a $200 bushing. Part # 27107643752 Please verify fitment! I believe it's from a 2011-13 X5, 8 cylinder, but it will fit other models. The warranty on this unit is two years from its purchase date of May 10th, 2018 No core charge, no tax! Thanks Thanks, Bruce 514-966-6777 b_bradshaw@mac.com |

I have had a 2008 E70 4.8i sold at 98K miles no problems with xfer case. I now have a 2011 E70 X5M with 62k miles no problems. I really don't read about a lot of problems with the xfer case on the E70s. Except modded X5M owners who floor it while turning and blow one (1 case).

I've got the same issue with our 2012 X6 35i Xdrive. Going into the dealer Monday for a t-case oil change, sure hope this fixes the problem. It's getting progressively worse with every 100 miles driven

How did noone comment- The actuator is a pretrty common problem. What happens it hthat teh metal actuator worm gear strips out the nylon/ plastic actuator gear which moves the clutch. The gear is a $20 part on amazon prime, and you the gear, new fluid, and ista adaptations all at the same time. Makes it smooth as silk.

Do the dance, do the dance....
Oil change and recalibration of the t-case did the trick. And not $800 as was mentioned somewhere, but $233 tax in. I was so relieved, I filled up the loaner (new X3) although I only put around 12 miles on her. Also bought a $100 Visa gift card for my advisor who's always doing his best for me.
So relieved. Was quoted $4100 for a new t-case.

Transfer case issues are common on 2012 model year X5s. I had mine replaced under the extended warranty in July 2019.
For my vehicle the problem appeared as a slight shudder / chatter from dead stop , and only after I installed a new set of staggered summer rims and tires. The problem went away when I put the original square set up back on the car for winter. Just the same, I had the transfer case replaced and it’s been fine since. |

Mine is an X6 2012 with 50k miles. Way too young for needing a new t-case. Did anyone (except Hedman) who had this shuddering first have the oil replaced to see if that cured it?

This is a known issue on 2012 vehicles and BMW really should be looking after the full cost of this even if the car is out of warranty. Thankfully I have a good third party warranty that covered this for me. |

I replaced my stripped gear, and changed the oil. Buttery after that, though I'm starting to get a little clunk when coming to a stop. I'm going to rerun the adaptations sometime soon again and see if that helps. For the record, it's been about 5 weeks since I fixed it, and around 4.5k miles.

Nope - the dealer advised that the transfer case was shot, but covered by my extended warranty, so I let them go ahead with replacing the old transfer case with a new one.
