Diagnosis - What is this noise?
Ive had my E70 for over a year and 10K plus miles since I got it. This noise has been there ever since. I cant seem to figure out what it is? It sounds like some kind of fan. When I open the hood of the car, I can barely hear the sound, which obviously tells me the sound is underneath the car. I don't have car ramps (at this time) to really get under there and take things apart. Just hoping someone has an idea what the sound is. Video is on you tube Under BMW X 5 what is this noise. or click link below
The sound gets quieter after car is warmed up. Is it catalytic converters rattling?

Maybe because we don’t know which engine you have.
When you say it gets quieter when its warm, meaning the rattle is still there or not. If its the v8 motor then it will be a long list of hunches. Diagnosising engine noise over the net is always a challenge. All we get is a small clip of the noise happening. We need some revving during the noises and some revving when its not happening so people can differentiate. |

N52 Engine. OK will refilm tomorrow when its cold. I guess to me its super easy to hear, the rattling and knocking. But to someone else it might not be
The rattling gets quieter after the engine is warm. I will do a cold engine with revving, and then with a warm engine of revving

I would suggest you use an automotive stethoscope to help pinpoint the noise. https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-52500-M.../dp/B0002SQYSM
Start touching various parts such as cat's, exhaust, alternator, etc to find out where it is coming from. |
