About to buy my first X5M

Me and the wife have been looking at selling her car and and buying her a X5M. With that being said I have a few in my area and I am wondering what are the important things to check and watch out for ?

There are several things to be honest, but it all depends on how many miles does it have and how many owners has it had, single or two owner cars are maintained much better in my perspective.

In general E70 X5Ms have several things that tend to fail or start to fail around 60k+ mark, valve cover gaskets, oil separators, oil pan gasket, CCV system, vacuum pump, aux water pumps, turbo coolant lines, vacuum lines, etc.

Look through Youtube, there's some content along those lines - they provide a good base knowledge as to what to watch out for.

NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN X5M AND A 50i WITH M-SPORT AND ADAPTIVE SUSPENSION.

X5M 0-60MPH IS ONLY A COUPLE OF SECONDS LESS THEN 50I M-SPORT.

MAINTENANCE COSTS OF X5M WILL BE DOUBLE THE LABOR COSTS OF OTHER BMW

$5k if you plan to DIY but if it's at the dealer or a shop, it'll be $10k+

Yep, and that is why I bought the X5M over the 50i. Why be slower? Mine has been reliable and I push it fairly hard.

^ Same here, I won't ever buy another non-M BMW. I've done it twice and both times ended up getting the M after.

Don't get me wrong though, they are definitely more expensive to maintain.

The S63 has less problems than the N63, but don't kid yourself - it's still a BMW

Getting in and driving makes it all worth it

That is very WRONG. Maintenance cost on x5m is no different that any other X5. labor is the same, some parts cost a bit more but there are many quality aftermarket parts available at reasonable prices.

Odd comment, however, someone could go to their grave in a Toyota Mirai if they are driving beyond their abilities, vehicles capabilities, road conditions, or traffic conditions traffic. All of us see those abused - daily.

Most important part, when buying used car is PPI(pre purchase inspection)
They will list you almost all parts which need to be changed soon, or work to be performed.
You will know 90% what is waiting you cost wise.
Last production years tend to have less problems.

Disagree. I had CPO 650i that spent more time in the dealership than my X5M, not to mention a lot more oil burning. I ditched it after a year and a half while the warranty was still good. The S63 is a LOT faster than the N63. I raced an X5M when I had the 650i and got my ass handed to me.

Whatever works for you !!
I am happy with my 50i M Sport with Adaptive Suspension.
It is plenty fast for me and I am never in a hurry to race anyone on the Interstate.
But I do drive at 85-100mph on Interstate when they are empty of traffic.

Of course! And I'm just sharing my maintenance experience with both engines which contradicts your statement.
