X5 best roof racks

I am interested in getting some roof racks, for mainly surfboards. trying to figure out which cross bar is regarded as the best. I would prefer something that snaps on without tools and can be taken on and off easily.

Eventually I have an interest in trying one of those campus fold open clam shell tents on the roof. I can do camping, but I can't do tent on the ground stuff.

Does anyone have experience carrying surfboards or water board or snow boards on the roof for their X5?

2011 with built in slotted rails.

On mine I have the low profile rails, and use the Thule aero bars. They do use an allen wrench, but it is small, I just leave in my center console. Takes less than 5 minutes to install or remove the rack when needed.
I use mine for bike and snowboard/ etc. with a roof box.

I would check the load rating of the roof rails for one of the tent things, not sure the roof or the rails are rated for enough weight.

I have the same as Colodano and really like them! Did a bunch of research and I like how Thule has so many accessories for those cross bars and they use a super clean T slot. Also I'm very happy with how little noise they make, I bought a cheap set on eBay a while back and took them off immediately because they whistled so loud and it really annoyed me.

Good luck to you!

I just went to the dealer today an got the BMW brand bars (which are made by Thule).
Con about these bars they do not have the aero blade style I wanted.
Pro about these are the cost. Half the cost and OEM fitment

Sure, I paid $217.
Online it was cheaper but I had to pay shipping.
With shipping it would have been more.

So I have the OEM roof bars installed for awhile. Never issues with whistling at any speeds (even up to 85).

I just installed Thule Snowpack Extender and the whistling starts at 40mph! Anything I can do? Maybe add fairing?

There might be with the little plastic raised stickers, meant to disrupt airflow. Affixed on the bottom.

But the reality is, that those things are aerodynamic bricks.

Figured, thanks. I'll just have to raise up the radio a little more

Having the extender is great during ski season

I bought the BMW racks and they are a really tight fit. They are not something I would want to take on and off any more than I absolutely had to. I don't notice any wind noise at all from them. Hope this helps.

Anyone have luck with a wind fairing for OEM roof bars? Doesn't look like Thule or Yakima ones really work for OEM bars. I've seen over ont he G05 forum that some used some clamps and rubber sheet to secure to the bar

Thule's AirScreen looks like it might work. It works with the AeroBlade Edge crossbars, which look look really close to the BMW OEM bars. Do you have rails on your X5 in addition to the cross bars? If so, you probably have a lot of height between the load and the rook and that might be why you get so much noise.

I have the AeroBlade Edge bars and the Cayon XT rack and I have no noise with the sunroof shade closed, and only a little when open. The whole setup sits much close to the roof though.

Yeah i have rails and oem roof bar installed. I never had issues with wind until i added the thule snowpack extender ski rack.

Everything Ive read said Thule fairings dont really work unless you fabricate them up

I have always found ski/board clamp style holders to be loud, one of the reasons that I went to a cargo box. The noise is way better, it is more secure when locked, can carry more gear and keep it clean and out of your interior space etc.

I thought about a topbox for awhile but I don't have any room to store the box when not in use :/
