For sure, more use of carbon fiber and CFRP in chassis and body panels. This creating the next/current generation of aircraft while legacy metal models have gotten heavier and heavier.

Self-driving cars need good surfaces and our roads in general are not. They will not effectively function in the current state of disrepair.
Car and driver tested the new M5 at 2.8 secs to 60-there was a time in the late 60"s early 70's that a truly fast car had a slightly sub 14 second quarter mile time so in another 10 years-2 second 0-60 cars will be available.

Be specific, what timeframe is attached to "very near" and what level of autonomy are you referring to?

elon musk noted that we will truly see 100% electric in 20-25 years, depending on the populous reception, market movements and government support.

What does electric have to do with autonomy?

nothing - my post wasn't about autonomy...lol

i had more posted but it didn't actually enter it (on my phone)

i meant to add -- as we get further along with electric, there will be more autonomous cars integrated into the fray. TRULY driver-less cars i think are a very, very long way out as there are alot of drivers that are still very young that enjoy the act of driving.

Ah, got it, understood. And I agree. I don't see how they close on autonomy with humans driving around in their privately held automobiles. Machine driving will work great if all the other vehicles are machines. It's a long way off in the order of 3 decades or more IMO. To change to autonomy will require a serious change in society here in the US at least. Freedom of mobility is paramount in our society and in human nature. Autonomy, ironically requires great control and consistency, neither to which humans adapt well.

At what point will drivers be feeling sick? I suspect that 15 years from now, the 0-60 for most sporty cars will be around 2 seconds. When the madness stops, then what will manufacturers brag about? top speed? As if I can go 280mph in a freeway. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Tesla is already claiming 1.7 seconds to 60mph for their 2020-2021 coupe.
1.7 sec to 60mph sounds impossible to me.. I know there is full TQ at 0 rpm but still 1.7 is not realistic..

True, but I still see full autonomy as being an 'option'. I'm sure all of us here have gone out on a Sunday drive with no true destination in mind. Doing this requires human thought and decision making. An autonomous car will only work if point A and point B are fully defined.

This of course assumes Governments not regulating casual driving out of existence.
