But really, what's the point? Is this going to go head to head with the Ford GT? I can't see them making a front AND mid-engine Vette concurrently. It doesn't make sense.

Cadillac is rumored to be developing a halo car, could be related to that?

GM has looked at making a mid engine Vette for years. Since the 60s or 70s. They almost did make one but for it scrapped for whatever reason. Now, I suppose, they are finally upping their game to make something special.

Hopefully it doesn't have a price tag like the Ford GT. And Cadillac's halo car? Probably this and add $100k+ plus to the price tag. Its what GM always does.

I agree. Does this mean Chevrolet is going to get rid of the front-engine car, replace it with the mid-engine car, and take it up market ($100K plus price point)?

There is absolutely no way GM will get rid of the front engine Vette. This car will have to be a limited run and not interfere with the front engine Vette.

Just like every die hard car person, a number of Vette owners have said this car should not get the Corvette name and are disgusted that it is.

Rumors have that the car will start in the $80k range.

How nice of them to line them up side by side. Definitely no engine in the front, looks super low.

Outside of the GT40, have there been any other mid engine pushrod cars? Kinda hoping they're just kidding and this will be a Cadillac.

Sounds almost nothing like a Corvette. I'm cool with calling it the Zora, but leave Corvette off of it.

I think Cadillac with DOHC engine. They sold over 30k Corvette's last year and have a plant dedicated to the product. Having only one low volume mid engine Corvette at a much higher price tag would leave a plant and big work force with not much to build and dealers almost nothing to sell.

Corvette also starts at too low a price to want to give up on the whole mid level market.

All of this is a guess so who knows.

It is going to be a Corvette. This car will be raced at Le Mans under the Corvette racing banner.

I gotta say, I'm pretty excited about a mid engined Corvette.

The more traditionalists who hate it the better. Let em bid up the classic models at Barrett Jackson while I steal a good deal at Chevy.

I'd take a V8 vette with a frunk that doesn't fit golf clubs, has euro-ish styling and ditches the mid life crisis persona in favor of more attitude. Just sayin...

What do you base this on?

Cadillac just won 24hr Daytona.
IMO, They aren't running the Cadillac brand just for the fun of it

Wayne Taylor Racing won 24hr Daytona, not Cadillac. It is a customer program, not factory. The Cadillac DPi that won Daytona is actually a Dallara DPi with mild Cadillac branded styling. The V8 in use is really just a Chevy 6.2L built by ECR. DPi isn't even allowed to run at Le Mans.

Cadillac is represented in Pirelli World Challenge with the ATS-V.R and now in IMSA with new DPi program. GM racing the Cadillac brand is nothing new(most recently racing in PWC for over decade), so I wouldn't use that as any sign for the future. Corvette Racing will remain GM's only full fledged factory racing team. The next Corvette(C8) will be mid-engine and they will continue the tradition of racing the Corvette brand in IMSA GTLM and make the trip to 24hr Le Mans. The dominance of the mid-engine Ford GT platform has shown how a well a car with a small frontal area does on the long straights of Le Mans. The team has to be licking their chops to get their hands on a mid-engine platform. I am sure they are in on the development.

Plus the Cadillac halo car rumors are old and have pretty much all died down. Everyone is calling the new mule a C8 Corvette. If you look closely you can see the C8 sharing the C7 roof, windshield, side windows, mirrors. This lends to the rumors of Chevy producing the C8 concurrently with the final years of front engine C7.

I think you mean 24hrs of Daytona, not LeMans.

Personally, I don't see a halo car branded a Cadillac selling anywhere near as well as a Corvette. The XLR was based on a Corvette, but didn't sell very well.

Looks like they will have the following cars in the Corvette corral:
Stingray
Grand Sport
Z06
ZR1
Zora - this being a limited run car that they'll be able to use for racing purposes.

Also, I have a relative that works for GM and worked in the automotive industry as an OEM supplier. GM only "leaks out" the information they want to leak out. The photo of the mid-engine car is obviously a drivetrain mule and has nothing to do with the body/shape of what the car would actually look like.
