Oil leaks
I just got word from my local dealer that they charge almost $5000 to change the gasket in the oil pan. I’m not asking for advice but rather “ is this April Fools Day? Another $1000 to repair a leaky oil monitor and the list goes on.
If your headlights are faded over and the dealer says over $1000 each, pick up a Meguiars Heavy Duty Headlight restoration Kit for about $25. Follow the simple fire and you’ll be super pleased. I did this over a year ago and my covers still look new. |

Welcom!
First witch type an year is your X5, we can’t guess that. And, no the price tag is not an “ April fools day” joke. The X5 ( N55 6 cyl gasoline) has 3 places to leak engine oil, the olifilterhouse, the valve cover ( those can be a DIY job with the right tools and some mecanical skills) A leaking oilfilter house could cause a lot of problems! The oilpan is ( in my opinion) an PIA job, and you must be a very experienced mechanic, with good tools and an car lift. A BMW dealer will fix the problem for a whole lot of $$$$ because it’s a whole lot of work. Most dealers won’t polish you headlights, but replace them and they are expensive! Check youtube if you want to know what to do for repairing the oilpan gasket. |

Those are dealer prices, so yeah. Find a highly rated independent to get a more realistic quote. But it's still going to be $$$. OPG is a complicated, messy, time consuming job. Get the engine mounts done at the same time.
FWIW you can often ignore OPG leak indefinitely. The other oil leaks like valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing are must-fix jobs, but OPG usually doesn't leak a lot, so it's more of a nuisance. As long as it's not leaking on your driveway yet, you can put it off till you've budgeted for it. |
