Almost every time I disarm my car, there is a strange electronic whine / whirr. It starts off as a low tone, then ramps up to a higher tone. Only lasts 2-3 seconds.

It is quite loud so one could would miss it.

It seems to be coming from the rear suspension area, but the car is not being raised or lowered.

Any idea what it is and it is unique to the M50i?

That makes most sense.

But this is when I've just unlocked the car.
Nobody in the car or ignition not on. Weird!!

Has anybody else noticed this sound?

Yep. In fact this has been consistent with most of my cars made after ~2000. You'll see it happen again after the car's gone to sleep, as the fuel pumps are off and not maintaining pressure in the line.

This is why modern cars shouldn't take very long at all to start and why the n54 dudes would refer to the starter running for a couple seconds before the motor turning over as a "hard start", since that usually signaled the death of their hpfp.

The fuel pump priming whine is less obvious in other cars, but if you listen for it, you'll start to hear a sound when you unlock other bmw's or audis, and when you enter some other makes. The timing of the priming is not a universal constant

+1 This whirring/waking up has happened in all my BMWs since 2012 - at least that is as far as I can remember.

So how about a sound that sounds like an American dial tone when the car is unlocked. My wife actually went looking for a phone that was off the hook (we don't have one&#128513. Any ideas?
And this is for a 50i, not the M50i

Lower tone? look at your wheel arches to see if the body's moving. That sounds like it's the air compressor for the suspension. It's normal for the compressor to relax when the car's off.

I'll take a look but I don't think so. It's more of an electronic sound.

Yes. This is it for Bimmers. Noticeable but normal since 2012 at least for TTV8 engines.
