Thanks for this write-up! My trans went from chronic failsafe warnings to getting stuck in my driveway but this helped me get the ball rolling in diagnosing my issues.

Knock on wood as I'm not sure if I'm 100% outta the woods yet but I let a buddy do my trans, diff and transfer case fluids yet I still got tons of transmission failsafe warnings to the point where eventually I had to stop driving the car and it's sat on my lift for over a month as life continued and I just drove my 328.

Long story short I discovered my buddy didn't replace the 4 sealing tubes, which I'm HOPING was the issue w/ my logic telling me that they'd shrunk so much that they weren't sealing, causing it to lose fluid pressure, hence my random slamming of gears, randomly flashing P on the cluster and getting trans failsafe even sitting in park. Bottom line though...replace the Mechatronics sleeve, Mechatronics gasket and do NOT skip the sealing tubes...it's only an extra $16 and to this day I still don't understand why he'd skipped something so menial even though he already had to drop the valve body anyways.

This is one of a few videos of my trying to diagnose my issue within the car. I spoke with multiple different types of shops, anything from repair places to transmission and diff rebuilders and was told anything from ignition coils and/or alternator causing voltage spikes to the transmission and/or transfer case needed rebuilding since I got tons of transfer case codes.

So was the transmission ok before your buddy did it?

It still drove daily but it'd go into trans failsafe that required code reading and clearing to make it driveable again if I was REALLY hard on it from roll racing. It gradually kept getting worse and worse even after the fluid flushes and eventually got to where it wouldn't move outta the driveway. I could reset the clutches and adaptations, drive it to work at 2pm, but then it'd oddly fall back onto it's face by the time I was off work at 11pm and I'd be limping home...flopping between 4-6th gear while driving down the highway, I'd try to go into neutral or even park if I went too slow on side streets.

Why did he drop the valve body or mechatronic unit for if he didn’t replace the seals?
I hope he refill the fluid back in WITH the engine on and closed up the fill bolt before the engine was turned off.

Said buddy is a former BMW of Seattle tech who opened his own shop. At the time I didn't have my QuickJack so I had him do the service on my X5M and the GF's 535xiT since my 740iL was hogging the two car garage with a suspension swap and I was remodeling the third garage.

I'd ordered the gaskets, filters and pan while he supplied the fluids since he got them at a better price. At the time I hadn't read this writeup so I didn't know all what was needed so the "kit" I got was only the Mechatronics gasket and sleeve...so that part is on me. Now since he was in there already, I can't explain why he didn't replace the sealing sleeves as well...so that's on him. I'm going to assume he knows the fill procedure in general. I pumped the same fluid back in that I'd drained out since it's new being only a year old.

If it drives fine again tonight after work (i didn't wanna risk driving it into work just yet), I'll take it to work tomorrow and continue crossing fingers that it doesn't fail again where it has the past few times I thought I'd solved it.

You really need to stop driving the car. No idea what kind of damage it might be causing. Do the fluid swap and install new sleeves etc again and see what happens after that. I'm sure it'll be fine after that.

I'd stopped driving the car, hence why it's sat on my lift for like a month. It was something that gradually got worse and worse but the final thing was not even being able to leave my driveway so ultimately it didn't give me a choice. Also part of that month sitting was my fearing it'd be something more, so I drove another vehicle and put off the sealing sleeves which took like 5 min to replace once the valve body was dropped. In hindsight I wish I'd swapped them sooner, and in even more hinsight I wish I'd done the job myself, but driving around a slow 328 makes one appreciate just how fast the X5M is :-)

She's back!

I tried saving as much fluid as possible when doing the draining into a clean pan, but said pan got filled quickly and I had to switch to a pan that wasn't precleaned before it was fully drained. After replacing the sealing bridges, following the torque values on here and p pumping the clean drained fluid back in; the trucks running perfectly again for the past few days! About the only issue I'm feeling is hard shifts but I know I'm about a quart low since having to switch pans as mentioned above.

The first service was a drain and fill at like 110k so I'll be doing another drain and fill since it still seems pretty dark even after 6-7 new quarts were mixed with old. I never thought I'd be happy dealing with 30FF codes but I'm just happy to have her back on the road :-)

Good news. Just make sure you top up the fluid ASAP and don't leave it for later.

Spoke too soon...made a sudden lane change and it completely fell on it's face like it used to beforehand, trying to force itself into Park or Neutral and all :/

I'll check with my master tech. I think it's the valve body.

Having just bought a 2013 X5, I visited the dealer to ask about transmission fluid service/life and was told it was for the life of the vehicle. The only reason they said, to check or top up transmission fluid was if it was leaking.

Complete ignorance and bullshit told to consumers to make the vehicle look like it'll have less operating costs...until yours sits parked for a month + like mine from avoiding dealing with it because I don't wanna hear I might have to drop $5k on a new trans around the holidays.

Changed mine at 100k and it made a world of difference. I wasn't having really any issues with the tranny but noticed it shifted much smoother and more appropriately after the service. I replaced the internal rubber bits, filter and fluid.

Is it necessary to do the adaptations reset process after changing the fluid? I feel like I should but don't really have a place to go through the whole process.

Finished with the transmission fluid service. Thanks jandref321 for a great writeup!!

I'm still learning new things with ISTA/Rheingold and later found that there's a service function for topping off the fluid and resetting the oil damage spectrum. I suppose there's a sensor monitoring the quality of the oil similar to the engine oil.

The X5M has 100k and didn't have any issues with the transmission. When I pulled the mechatronics it was noticeable that the seals were flattened.
