Go Fast Bits DV+ on X5M DIY

Gents,

I was working on replacing the filtered intake air ducts and had to take out the diverter valves in the process. One of the valves fell apart immediately when I unscrewed it and the spring fell into the ether. I spent hours looking for it to no avail and ended up overnighting a set of DV+ diverter valve rebuild/upgrade kits. There is a thread on here about BOVs that someone mentioned they fit these to their X5M and after speaking with the owner of Go Fast Bits (GFB), Bret, I knew they would work.

The only problem with fitment was the screws that came with the kit. The bolts were for a 335i and did not fit the X5M’s plastic charged air pipe. I spent a long time at Home Depot and Fastenal but couldn’t find a matching screw size. I bought a box of screws that were close but they barely tightened and I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING NORMAL SCREWS FROM THE STORE. I took to the internet for a while and found that there are special screws for plastics that must be used to prevent the plastic from tearing. After I spent a while measuring thread pitch, thread length, core width, overall lenth, head diameter, etc. I found the right size for sale from a German company called Screwerk. They have a base in the US and they sent me out a sample of 10 screws. They fit perfectly! I also let Brett know from GFB so hopefully they offer the kit for sale with the appropriate screws.

PARTS:

2 x Go Fast Bits (GFB) DV+ Part # T9356
6 x Screwerk Plastic Screws STP38A0600350E
Engine Oil for lube

TOOLS:

Multi Head Screw Driver
T25 Torx bit
1/4" Drive Ratchet
1/4" Drive Extension
6mm Socket
Clean Rags

GO FAST BITS DV+ INSTALLATION DIY

STEP 1: Remove Engine Cover and Intake Silencer (Airbox)

a) Pop the hood using latch near driver’s foot rest
b) Lift hood using lever centered under kidney grills

c) Lift off plastic engine cover, pulling up on 4 x pressure/grommet fittings under the cover

d) Remove air silencer plastic insert, grabbing and pulling toward the rear of the vehicle

e) Loosen hose clamps connecting air silencer to air duct using 6mm socket, 1 x clamp per bank

f) Lift to disconnect 3 x pressure/grommet fittings under the air silencer, pull air silencer assembly out of the passenger air duct first, then driver side air duct to remove

g) place clean cloth inside air ducts to prevent debris from entering the turbochargers

STEP 2: Remove Diverter Valves

a) Diconnect wiring from diverter valves by pressing wire clip and pulling out
b) Use T25 Torx bit to remove 3 screws securing each Diverter Valve (6 total screws, You may need to remove the filtered air duct rubber boot from the driver’s side to reach one of the screws)

c) Remove Diverter Valves (BE CAREFUL NOT TO LOSE PIECES, CAN FALL APART EASILY)

STEP 3: Install DV+

a) Remove diaphragm and spring from diverter valve solenoid (BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE O-RING)

b) Insert new DV+ Spring and plunger

c) Install DV+ billet housing by aligning nipple and pressing until the part snaps on (This only goes on one way since there is a nipple that aligns with it and it’s a tight fit)

d) Insert piston spring and piston (Lube up the piston with fresh engine oil, it’s a tight fit)

e) Reinstall the Diverter valve and DV+ assembly into the charged air pipe (BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROP THE PISTON)
f) Use T25 torx bit to screw in new 35mm screws

STEP 4: Reinstall Intake Silencer and Engine Cover

I can’t really give you any impressions. They do work, but it’s difficult to tell the difference with an automatic transmission, even in manual mode. M5james said that he does plan to purchase these in the future and will do some logging to compare boost levels during shifts.

I will say that I am satisfied with having the DV+ even if I can’t physically feel the difference. These parts are very well manufactured and I have confidence that they will not fail. Think about them like SS Brake Lines (which I also just installed), they won’t make the braking feel ‘better’ but they give you confidence that you can push the limits and you know that they will last a very very long time compared to OEM.

Great write up! Did GFB say anything about including longer screws since its now known they're needed?

I'll run some JB4 logs and see if they hold peak boost better. Either way they're still more stout than the stock units and I'm guessing will come into play more on higher boosting applications.

Great write up.
Looks very nice.
(I have been considering these as well).

Do they sound different?

I would also be interested to see if there is any performance gain/loss with these over the stock pieces.

I haven’t heard back from GFB about the screws but I can’t see why they wouldn’t sell a kit for us...especially if everyone starts emailing them lol.

I can’t hear them at all. Maybe you’d be able to with your RK intakes.

I see you did the same HPS silicone connectors I did...hopefully that solved any issues you were having

Yep! Hoses look great and work great. I am concerned about the longevity of the plastic charge pipe though...especially considering how it’s manufactured as two separate pieces that are pressed or otherwise glued together. Making a metal one for that tight space would be terribly difficult I imagine, and with the small community it may not be a venture companies would be eager to take on. Maybe someday in the future.

Yeah, but then you've gotta integrate the BOV's into them as well..making it that much harder. They're pretty thick though, I drilled and thread tapped mine for meth nozzles and they haven't cracked or anything under pressure. The charge pipes are bolted down, so I imagine a hose/clamp would come off before these crack.

Damn...I’ve read posts where you describe getting ready to push meth...didn’t know you were on it already, unless you’re capped off. Is your X5M just a project car at this point? Your F150 the DD?

...now that you’re done with the engine swap are you going to work on that build thread?

I wish but everything is installed andon wired but the nozzles are just capped off. I bought a used meth kit and my FSB was dead right outta the box, I've gotten another but I haven't gotten around to tearing the DME box open again since that's where I installed my JB4. The Harley is definitely my project truck since its still missing over 50% of the interior since gutting it to do Dynamat, wrapped all plastic surfaces in leather, added LED puddle lights in the mirrors and bottom edge of the doors...I'm basically BMW'upping my truck so it's not so crude lol. The X5M is my DD, otherwise the Harley is my backup in case I haven't finished stuff on our other cars.

I know, I know...I need to start my build thread lol...soooo many pics to reduce adj so they'll post otherwise I'd have written it :-)

M5james have you gotten a chance to test these out yet?

I'm going to grab a set but I tried to get the screws that jandref321 pointed out but the company's website says they only sell to businesses, not private.

I'll have to call them on Monday to see what's possible.

I was able to buy the screws (or put the order in at least). I called the company and they said to just put your name in the company name field if you are a private entity buying these screws.

https://us.screwerk.com/en

Total for 6 came out to 30$ shipped.

Once the screws arrive I'll buy the DV+

Screws came in..ordered the DV+s early this morning.

I'll try to grab some logs pre and post to see if there is anything in the logs that indicate it's holding boost better during shifts or at higher psi.

They are here. I gotta go capture some logs of pre install conditions while at peak boost and boost while shifting gears while accelerating.

Looking forward to your results (even though I just found out I can't use them due to clearance issues with how they mount on the stock n63 turbos....I'll have to either go with the turbosmart option or maybe just upgrade to M turbos

On the N63 the diverters are directly on the turbos right?

I wonder if they sell relocation kits to angle it a bit?
