They're trying to widen the gap between the regular series and their M variants. That's why BMW always emphasizes the minimal similarities between the regular series and the M models. (E.g. only 20% shared parts)

M Performance models are sort of half-baked M cars, such as the M240i, M760i, X3 M40i, etc.

I have never had such a great experience being an early adapter. We paid substantially less. We have more aggressive mapping for low end torque. Our cars weigh less. Passive suspension was available and is (IMO) - perfect. Allocations were easy to get, 4 year maintenance, Euro discount 7% Very little visual difference on exterior. Platform has been extremely reliable We did OK...... |

I dunno gang. M cars used to be all about the track? What on an OG M6 is track-specific? (Okay engine thats it) How about the e30 brakes? Were those real special? The OG M5's 15" wheels? Suspension?
Modern day BMW's are amazing. Ok, Porsche is better, but you know what? Thats it. Go to any club event at your local track. Its not loaded with Ferrari/Lambo/Audi/etc. Its Porsche and BMW. M continues to rock. At the very worst, its an awesome platform to mod and make it "how they should have made it". Because we are all better engineers and drivers than those on BMW's payroll! |

More M models? Bring it on! In this day and age of impending electrification, we should embrace a brand trying to expand its performance lineup. Who else is doing this for us? Sure, they are gonna milk us but they always have, for decades. We all pay with our hearts, not our minds. And besides, all this is cheaper than an affair, if maybe not as fun. But lasts longer!

The T does not need to be a separate model. It's a base with a bunch of options. Likewise, the GTS is not different enough from the S. It's just a pen S with a bunch of standard options. But many of the many variants have huge differences. There is RWD and AWD for almost every model except, oddly, the Targas. There are also three different body styles. Those are big differences. So many slices of cheese, but not all the same flavor. |

Lots of guys know me on here and how much I love M cars in general and M3s in particular.
But a recent visit to a bmw dealer revealed a price of 102k on an M3 CS. That's insane for a car based on what amounts to a 35k 320i. An M3 makes sense at 70, maybe 80k. But once you get near 100...why not just get a car that doesn't need to make any compromises for lower level siblings?

Please list all of these manufacturers that release all of their performance levels at once. Not GM, Ford, FCA, Lamborghini, McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes, Lotus, Porsche, Audi, etc etc. I guess that leaves the Toyota Camry and perhaps a few Kia's that are released at all "performance" levels at once. You ignore the fact that they have to develop a market for the car before they put in the R&D and marketing money into fine tuning the models for further niche'. For those of you complaining about the new M tiers, I don't understand you. Fact is the CSL will be a track focused car, my guess is most of you don't understand what that means. First it is a niche model, second it won't be a great street car because the better a car it on track the worse it is on the road (rare exceptions like the McLaren 720s). My guess is less than 5% of M2 owners track their cars, this is a car for them. Those who need a daily driver have choices. Since when is the idea that car guys having more choices is a bad thing? I suspect some just like to complain. For me offer me as many versions as you want and I will choose the one that fits my needs best. Better that than having a one size fits all solution. |

Simple solution, buy the one you like and fits your needs and budget. Why should everyone be forced to buy the same version? The CS is a niche model, I wouldn't buy one because of the very point you mention but I don't see how its a bad thing someone else can. |
