Fraud it's not easy as they are bolted from underneath which means that you need to remove the headlining. There is some guides on how to do this if you look hard enough on the web but it does not look a straight forward task.

Sorry for the bad news

Not right, sorry.

It is an easy 5 minutes job. I did it when we installed the carbon like rood top.
The black end of each rail is kind of a cover for the screws, the way to remove those black plastic ends is to carefully place a very thin plain screwdriver covered with some thin cloth in order not to scratch the paint, do little movements from the bottom doing with just enough preasure to pop it up, then you have to slide each cover backwards, be carefull sliding and not pulling up because you can brake the small plastic guides.
Sorry for my bad english, hope I made myself clear enough

Yes, sadly the trim piece that goes on each side of the roof where the rails assembly will show 4 holes with all screws, you will have to remove those pieces of trim (they just pop up easily by hand) and buy a set of 2 "plain" ones ( no holes for roof rails) in order to have them without the holes of the roof rails.

I've swapped my roof railings out already. The "children" assume that I put an M part on my car. Not so. Lumma had flat roof railings before the X5M existed, but they discontinued them, so, because having flat roof railings was part of my project, I had to settle for BMW railings.

You do have to drop the liner ... and the shop said that it was more work than he anticipated.
