Well, I'm not convinced that every opponent of the wall in DC "wants open borders", so I thought the wording was appropriate.

I don't disagree and I agree with the judge thing. The Repubs have a gill in the senate that asks for 500 judges. But if there were a wall they would not get that far. The cost of flying them back to Central America is enormous. Can't afford to keep them and can't afford to get rid of them.

Glad I'm 73. We Baby Boomers had the greatest life ever on this planet!

Its obvious that we need to find a way to "legalize" our immigrants no matter what color they may be. We simply don't have enough workers to fill available jobs. Period.Or to maintain growth. As per the very conservative Wall Street Journal in Wednesday's edition. Our birthrate is sufficiently low to require significant immigration, if we wish our economy to keep pace.

Let's find a way without the same stuff that has been repeated down through our brief history-Irish, Italians,Polish, Chinese, Jews have all been described as less than desirable.

There are plenty of LEGAL ways to come to America, and work. The issue is not with the existing laws, it's that we don't enforce them. We continue to allow people to come illegally yet have no repercussions for that illegal entry and work. And since it's easy/inexpensive for both the employee and EMPLOYER, what motivation is there to follow said laws?

As we have extended the "necessity" of personal cell phones and employment use of technology, there is no excuse the eVerify system is not mandated with requisite financial penalties to employers for not using the system.

The vast number that cross the border (illegally) immediately claim asylum. Its prohibitively expensive to adjudicate their claim and send them back.

So strictly speaking you are right but as a practical matter the laws are facked up. The law should be changed that says if you enter illegally you are forcibly sent back to where you crossed illegally.

But as I said..my grandson (an MP Marine) will be employed to escort them to an airplane who will fly them north.
Its safer there than going to the Middle East which is where some of his comrades are heading as we speak.

Something more effective than a wall for the amount of money that will need to be spent.

Just because you oppose the wall doesn't mean you are for "open borders". There are miles and miles of gray area and nuance in between those two extremes.

No barrier is by definition an open border-thanks.
Case in point-100,00 stroll across this open border at a cost of 10 billion per year

We'll agree to disagree on that front.

By that definition we have "open borders" with Canada, too.

Exactly.

An open border is not defined by the presence of a physical barrier. Its defined by policy. I think the wall debacle is a shiny object for the diehard trump fans with TDS, but that doesn't mean I am pro-open border.

We have one of the best border deterrents ever. Our weather. They spend a winter here and usually decide to stroll right on back over the border. If my Prime Minister doesn't find them first and stuff a wad of taxpayers cash in their pockets anyways.

I don't mind as much if they genuinely want to work though. Way way way too many Canadians (not landed immigrants, I mean people who've been here their whole life) claiming "disability" for no reason at all. Love to see an overhaul of those programs - those that truly can't work, I'm good supporting. Those that are just lazy, screw them.

I got sucked into the wall thing earlier this year, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it was never much more than both sides pandering and playing to their bases (especially the extreme ends). Dems putting on a no-funding show and Reps esp Trump putting on their own show to build it no matter what.

I think better border laws, policies and enforcement are necessary and important, but ironically they become increasingly important as we expand social services because of the cost (we would only want pay-as-you-go immigrants if we offered a lot of low income benefits). Thus the Dems should support strong immigration reform and it might be the Reps who prefer more immigration (unskilled workers, farm labor, etc).

I feel like politics these days compels re-reading Lewis Carroll. Or listening the the Kinks “Lola”.

I'm waiting for Mr. Trump to start a speech with, "I have a modest proposal for the democrats leading the opposition to all of my ideas." I'll be in traction from snapping my spine and breaking all my ribs laughing.

and I post again, all this talk over a $5B wall to secure our own country.

Isreal gets $38B in US tax dollars for defense. Bi-partisan support, no questions asked. They are in a budget surplus, by the way.

What in the hell is going on?
