Best Tires for E70 - In between All and Off Road
Looking to replace the tires on my 2011 X5 35i with Sportpackage, has the staggered wheels with the 315's in the back.
Trying to find a good tire with a bit beefier look, something in between all season and off road. An All Terrain is obviously too aggressive, but hoping for something with a more aggressive look than a Michelin Sport Pilot as an example. What do you guys run, any recommendations? Many thanks in advance. |

I have this exact same car (‘11 35i with Sport Activity Package) and I am also looking for a warm weather tire package. Unable to identify a lightly-used set with confidence, and new ones with sensors will be over $1800 all day long.

If you went square, I'd suggest the michelin defender Ltx M/S, as it's a REALLY great tire that's more aggressive than most all seasons, keeps up off road, and was awesome in the wet and snow. I don't think they come in the sport staggered sizes though.

Going to be very hard to find a large selection of tires in 275/40 and 315/35 R20's.
For a more aggressive-looking/performing tire that won't ride terribly on the road, I'd say the K02. The next step down to have a less aggressive look comparatively and more highway performance would be the LTX AT2. Finally, for a tire mainly used on the highway that isn't sporty looking due to its beefy treads, but still decent in off-road conditions you'd have the LTX MS2 / X LT AS / Defended LTX (All the same tire really). If you want any of these though, you'll have to play around with the tire sizes as I don't believe they're offered in our stock config. You need to be very careful to make sure you don't upset the transfer case when doing so, so do your research if this is the path you want to go down. As you can see the theme here is Michelin, with your tires being the only four points on your car, it's the one area that you should never cheap out in. Doesn't matter how good your brakes are, how fast your car is, or how good of a driver you are. If the rubber connecting you to the road can't handle the inputs, then it was all for nothing. When I did a brief look for tires in our OEM sizes, it's unfortunately summer-oriented. When it's time for me to upgrade though, I will probably be going with the new Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 4's. I want an all-season tire that will leave me confident even in the Colorado snow, as well as give me enough grip to enjoy what this car has to offer. There's also a DWS06 which is slightly comparable, but they will be louder as they wear down as well as a slightly rougher ride, as well as much older rubber/tire technology.

The K/O's seem too aggressive for the X5, but I think the LTX A2 would work. Now I have to see if it comes in the required sizes. Thanks again. |

Ive had 19" Vredesteins on my E70 for the past 30k miles and have had no issues here with the ugly streets of NYC.. I'm due for a swap soon since I'm going with 20's, but keeping the OE staggered sizes. Going once again with Vredseteins, non runflats.

I will be needing at least a set of rear 315s prolly within the next 6 months.
In the hot desert climate I live in I've heard stories of good tire shop guys nearly begging customers to not get michelins on nice/performance cars. I guess the issue is they have a nasty habit of getting hard as hockey pucks in short time |

Very true. That is their claim to long life. I had Michelins LTX M/S on my truck and they became rock hard and full of micro cracks within a year. Actually they get rock hard in cold below 40F weather ., not in hot desert climate. Last edited by X5 MAN; 03-08-2021 at 07:46 PM.. |

Side story: My dad then myself ran BFG All-Terrains on all kinds of stuff from dune buggies to full-size pickups... never had an issue with them for 20+ years. Then sometime after Michellin bought out BFG the last 2 sets of BFG All-Terrains I had on pickups of mine developed cracks all over them (but more so on the inside sidewalls oddly enough) within 18months. Had to have them pro-rated out (2 sets this way) & then finally just gave up as at least 1 out of a complete set wouldn't balance right. Went to Nittos on the trucks & although they wore a bit faster, they always balanced like glass & wouldn't dry rot. Not sure where Michellin or other brand tires Michelin owns work, but it ain't with my stuff in my local climate.
