What's good under $10k?

Sold my Mazdaspeed6 today. If I can find something that makes me giddy like a school girl, I might buy a new toy instead of downsize like I plan.

-Has to have some fun factor.
-Can't be old unless it's a classic from the early 70s or before.
-Can't be a money pit & has to be somewhat reliable. In other words, not wrenching more than driving (Unless you want to for mods).
-If it's FWD, it's going to have to make up for that with super coolness elsewhere.

For some reason, I want a truck or SUV. Don't need it. Would be a just because buy if I did it.

Z4 3.0 in a six speed. Close to the same fun as the ///M versions, but far less headaches due to no VANOS or rod bearing issues that plague the S54.

You'd probably be spending 20% of the car's value in maintenance each year.

Manual Isuzu Trooper, the last generation. Bonus points for the screwball two door.

My folks had a manual four door and I did some great off roading with it in New Mexico and lots of other stupid inclement weather driving. Great truck. Do not go near an automatic one.

Actually I was entertaining the idea of buying an older model Mazda Miata. How are they?

Honestly the best city car you can own. I could drive mine sideways down my residential street and people would wave and smile. Driving down the same street ten under and totally short shifting got me flipped off in the replacement M Coupe.

There are a lot of them here--my neighbor across the street and two doors down both have one as does a guy a few houses down. My 335 is fast and fun, but having a convertible, manual car sounds like fun as a sidecar. My neighbor across the street bought his for $3500 and put a few small mods on it....I'm kind of missing the simple sports car feel. Wish my father in law would give me his 1960's era Alfa Spyder....haha.

I really want Alfa GTV2000 from my birth year, or a Lancia Fulvia, but I know just buying a new Miata would be cheaper, safer, and much less stress, plus I do miss having a convertible you can raise and lower the top with one hand while moving.

I didn't even know what that Alfa was (don't know much about Alfas), but looked it up and it is very different with what the FIL has. He got it a couple years ago as an inheritance....it's mint condition and shall I say, willed to me...very simple car and not seen very often.
One thing I noticed when looking under the hood is that this had to be the easiest car in the world to change spark plugs on.

Yeah, but probably you have to take the engine out to change the oil.

Stick to your plan is best choice. That said...

The only fun car under $10k that really adds a contrast to your garage would be a Jeep Wrangler. A performance car or a convertible would just be redundant to what you already have.

A Jeep TJ (1996-2006) can be had in your budget and would be the best choice if you “needed” to buy something imo. They used the bullet proof I6 motor that will run 300k plus with minor maintenance. Manual transmission is solid. Can take doors and top off and still small easy to drive, and the first generation of wrangler with coil springs so rides way better than any prior Jeep models. Nice ones can be had under $10k with around 100k Miles.

I say stick to your plan though because you need to want to own a Jeep. You would have already been seeking one and not chatting here if it’s what you wanted. Jeeps aren’t the easiest cars to live with. The tops leak and they ride rough, but tons of character. I have one (newer one a jk unlimited rubicon) that I dailied for 6 years. Always gets comments and attention, everyone loves jeeps. If you really want to just spend the $$ I think a wrangler is the best choice for your budget and garage, and you won’t lose any $ on it also they hold value better than anything in my experience.

Yep, you used to be able to get a decent s2k years ago for around 10k, but they’ve gone back up in value recently.

I would get a Toyota or Nissan 4x4 pickup. Something you can cruise down back country roads and trails and explore areas you have likely never been. It would also be handy in the winter when the roads get slick. Maybe not as cool as a Jeep, but much more functional.

To keep it under $10k, you will likely have to get something from the 2000's or earlier, but a Toyota or Nissan from that era would be reliable if it doesn't have too many miles and was maintained. Also try to find a truck from the south so that you don't have to worry about rust.

I got my first 4x4 in college around 1986; a GMC Jimmy S15. I have had a 4x4 truck ever since.
