2011 E70 X5M Pure Turbos Stage 1 Install Issue
Hey guys hope all is well. Having an issue with my brothers X5M, hoping someone here can help me figure this out.
So his car started going into limp mode, took it to my shop to see whats going on. Turns out one of the turbos was missing the wastegate, apparently it somehow fell off and disappeared. I should note, that the turbos are upgraded turbos from Turbo Labs. Now the previous owner had that job done, and based on the reviews of Turbo Labs I did not have any faith contacting them to get things resolved. So we went and got the Pure Turbos Stage 1 kit from ECS. After installing the turbos, my shop told me that they are having issues with one turbo not holding pressure on Bank 1. They did all the troubleshooting, checked actuators, did boost pressure test with the proper equipment, checked vacuum lines running at 11.5", and all that other fun stuff. Then my shop was in contact with Chuck at Pure Turbos and did everything he told them to do and troubleshooted remotely, still no resolve. At that point, we decided to send in the one turbo that is not holding pressure to Pure Turbos for an inspection. Well, after being charged a service fee for a warranty inspection (lol), they told us that the turbo is in perfect working order and they found no issues. So now, I turn to you fine gentlemen to give me any other troubleshooting ideas. I should note, the car is stock aside from some VRSF catless downpipes. One thing I was told from Pure Turbos is that these turbos need to be running on a car with a tune, and this car has no tune. So if that is true, can you guys give me some advice on what tune you guys prefer? Someone also told me that the car does not need to be tuned to run Stage 1 turbos from Pure Turbos... so getting contradicting information here. Any input is much appreciated. Thanks!

I would say check the downstream components like the charge pipe, intercooler for that side that isn't holding boost. Check the intake manifold for that side, the throttle body as well for that side. Could have leaks anywhere in the path to the engine.

I would like to imagine my shop checked all these issues, but I will reconfirm with them tomorrow. Thanks for the tips!

take a look at precisiontuning.com. and on pureturbo's website, a few dyno images are from precision tuning.

Update: Problem has been resolved. It was indeed the actuators that were faulty. Replaced with brand new, and all is well. Car is running like a champ with no tune. Thanks for your input gents.

I've run a few "upgraded," turbos like these in the past. When I say upgraded, I mean like what Pure did here with just swapping the compressor wheel, but the housings physically are the same.
Often you don't need a tune for these, as they flow the same short of some very specific edge cases. tens lbs of crap can't fit into a 5lb bag, and that is what is trying to be done here. Trying to get more air in (new blade design on compressor or turbine), but physically the housings can only get you so far. A tune can optimize things, giving you the full benefit, but often it's not needed as a daily driver. I'm glad you got it all sorted out. |
