How to remove rear seat belt ratchet??

2008 x5 e70 - I want to replace a bad seat belt that is the back seat passenger side ( not the 3rd row ) this is the second row.. i see the belt goes into the ratchet or retractor behind a piece of plastic moulding/cover up top that says air bag. is it ok to take that off without getting pounded by a blowing up airbag? where is the ratchet located? right behind that top cover or do i need to remove the whole black panel that runs down the whole side of the door?? has anyone seen the inside of this???
i have not been able to find any photos or videos of this.. any photos would be great..

Typically you would remove the battery negative terminal, and step on the brakes for 15sec to purge any remaining power stored in the electrical system.

From there, proceed with disassembly of parts that may contain an airbag. This is the general rule of thumb for most any car foreign or domestic I've worked on.

Hey.. im just trying to figure out how many trim pieces and panels i need to remove to get to that ratchet/seatbelt roll.. i was told its way at the bottom of the pillar and never at the top.. it would look like i need to remove the top plastic cover and the whole major side panel - that looks tough to remove..
any ideas on that???

I don't have my car available to look. but that is about right. Usually installed low, to be anchored to the frame of the unibody for the most strength.

Just start pulling things off like an onion. Remove top layers of panels, to get to what you're after. Maybe you take off an extra piece or two, but you'll figure it out.
