Poor fuel economy on X6 35D

I now have around 5,000 miles on my X6 3.5D and I expected a lot better fuel economy than I am getting. Currently getting 19 mpg and 20.5 mpg at a push. This is a combination of town driving and long motorway journeys. I managed to get an average of 28 mpg with my X5 3.0D without a problem. I have even had the car back at the dealers for them to reset the ECU etc as I thought the car was getting the incorrect fueling. Is anyone else experiencing as bad economoy as this?

Good luck with that. They don't even offer that car for sale in the U.S.

Are you going by the cars fuel gauge/trip meter or actually measuring gallons used to miles driven?

I have the same Car with 4600 Miles on the clock now, I have not seen less the 28MPG even when I drove it home the first time, so that economy is poor, I am getting 30+ around the houses and 32/34 on long runs, hard driving on long runs is giving 32 MPG now. Remember I have the P-Tronic box fitted. I drove the first demo in the UK with 28 miles on the clock and it returned 29 MPG standard, so again you have a poor economy with that car. Town only driving should give better than you are getting IMO, take it to another dealership to check it over. Have you checked tyre pressures?, I check mine every two weeks, they do go down some, I run 34PSI fronts and 36PSI Rear.
I bet yours are low.

I wonder if the mileage computation is properly calibrated.
Only 1 way to confirm accuracy.

Gas consumption is related organically to driving style. Flooring the pedal from dead stop is the culprit. I remember the Top Gear episode where Jeremy tested a Prius and an M3 on their track, and the M3 only consumed just a bit more than the freakin' his uglyness Prius the 1st.

This reminds me. Check the vehicle setting to see if MPG is set or KPM, mine was set wrong and so was my 635DS when I first got it, it's easy to reset on the screen.

The tyre pressure makes a big difference mate.
Check and have it at the recommended pressure.

Did you reset the computer?

My advise is to fill the car up, eset the trip computer and drive the tank empty.

Next fill up, note the gallons used and divided into the miles driven.

Ignore all MPG computer readouts unless you understand what you are reading.

I had the same anguish when driving a tuned up Touareg, as when driving my Mazda.

I never watch the real time consumption because it freaks me out even in my Mazda. . jumping from 2 liters/km to 25. .and back to 4, or 5, then back to some 29 and so forth.

Even the average comsumption calculations are sometimes fucked up on the japanese machinery. Sometimes it shows 5.5 liters/100 km at 130 km/h sometimes it shows 7 at the same speed, no change in drive style either.

It occured many times that computer goes crazy mostly in urban driving. Once my Mazda showed me that I consume 28 liters/100 km in slow urban driving, which is totally hogwash for a 2 liter engine, 120 HP.

Reset button is king. .on any car. .german or japanese. . which is superfluous. .cars are only german and japanese. . all others are cheap imitations.

Ok, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Masserati are excepted

Mileage vs km, Gallons vs. gallons

comparisons are best done w/liters/km as us gallon=3.78L & imperial gallon=4.54L

13 litres per 100Km = 20.9MPG if thats all town work then out of town will be much improved. Still way better than ecosse79 MPG

not bad for a tank twice the weight of the Mazda, plus 160 HP extra!!! 3 liters more in consumption, for such a huge difference? I think it's more than perfect.

That is about 26MPG U.S. Not bad.

Since it is rated 28MPG U.S. I bet you can get 30-32MPG with cruise control and steady driving.
