Please answer some E70 35i questions

Hi E70 X5'ers,

I'm looking at a nice xdrive35i with 78,000 k's (48,000 miles).

We love the car and are pretty close to buying it but I have a few questions that I'm hoping you lovely folks can answer.

I have a E90 330i which I think does ~6.5 secs to 60mph and as the Xdrive35i is supposed to do 6.8 I tried to compare the two but the X5 just didn't really feel quick. I didn't feel any turbo lag or hear it at all. I'm not sure if you'd normally hear it or even feel it spool up. I've had GTR's in the past so pretty familiar with turbos, this didn't really have any feel to it. Would there be a possibility of boost leak or turbos gone at this mileage?

Secondly, something has happened to the engine bay trim. See pic below. The owner didn't know why it was like this. There are now 3 self-tapper 10mm bolts holding the trim in place. It looks crap and I'm hoping its just been caused by somebody being heavy handed and snapping some flaps off.

Thanks in advance everybody.

Christian

The n55 based 35i X5's are great. I have one. Normal stuff like OFHG, oil pan gaskets, water pumps etc.

It will feel heavy because it is heavy, over 5,000lbs.

That trim damage though? no explanation. It looks cut out as if someone mounted something there?

Love my 2012 x35i. But it's an SUV, not a drag racer. Just got the BMW hitch that I will install as soon as it warms up a bit here in Colorado.

As FCBuff said, stay on top of the normal maintenance. And I agree that the trim damage looks more intentional than accidental.

5000lbs and 300hp is not fast. simple math here. But the newer trans is nice and smooth.

Most publications claim better numbers than 6.8 for the E70 xDrive35i.

Motor Trend got 6.1 - https://www.motortrend.com/cars/bmw/...-x5-xdrive35i/

C&D's est. is also 6.1 - https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...ive35i-review/

Like others have said it's a 5000 lb. vehicle. There's plenty of performance tuning options to increase HP & Torque.

Not sure what happened to those trim pieces? I'm sure you've looked at other engine bay pics like I just did, there doesn't appear to be anything that was mounted/attached there

Thanks guys, very reassuring.

To be clear though, I wasn't concerned so much with the performance, more that it didn't seem to be as quick as my 330i despite same 0-60mph figures. I was wondering whether I'd feel the turbo spool at all. I've only test driven the 30d so far.

The trim weirds me out. Its not sitting well with me. As some of you said it does look more intentional and pics of the bays online show nothing really there expect flaps and screws.

Thanks again guys.

I was just browsing a few others for sale and I noticed this.

It looks to be suffering from some issue with that trim piece.

If that piece kept falling down then perhaps a previous owner took it upon themselves to "fix" it with zero regard for a quality repair.

They aren't quick, but pretty fast, plenty of power to merge and pass people. As for not feeling the turbos, you really aren't supposed to feel them as its a twin scroll to minimize lag. However you can hear them when there are no other sounds.
