Oil Pan Gasket

Hey guys...I've had a small oil leak on my 12 X5M. I took it to a Stealership about 5 months ago and they said it was a bad oil pressure sensor. Replaced it, but still have the problem. I haven't noticed oil in the garage and have kept it parked for winter, so haven't been too worried.

I took it to a different BMW dealer today for the airbag recall and had them do a multi-point inspection. They say it's a bad oil pan gasket & they want $2,300 for the gasket. I'm definitely going to take it to an Indy, but was wondering what I should be expecting as a "reasonable" price?

They also said both crank case vent lines are cracked, so I'll take care of those too. Thanks for any input!

Upper or lower pan gasket? Did they remove the brace support to confirm the leak? You wont be able to see anything without taking the brace off as it blocks everything from the oil pan up.

Either which, upper or lower gasket, it does not require to drop the subframe. But the upper gasket will need the oil pump remove. Lower gasket is as easy as zipping out 20+ bolts.

Bmw charges $400 an hour labor, lol must be nice.

Upper is very expensive...$1600 plus. It requires removal of axles and differential. I have pics of when mine was replaced by dealer under warranty. I can post them later. The write up was some awful number that I was happy not to pay. Take into account the oil change, diff fluid, axle washers, etc.

I replaced mine last fall. BMW quoted me $4,700 for upper and lower oil pan gasket replacement. I contacted several Indy shops around with the cheapest quote being $1,600 just to replace the two gaskets and change the engine oil and the highest quote was $2,500 to replace the gaskets, all new aluminum upper and lower pan bolts (they are one time use only), new axle seals, front differential service while it was removed, new axle retaining nuts, and an oil change. I love DIY projects so I planned it out and tackled it myself. I bought all the parts listed above plus an engine support bar to remove the front subframe and was out under $500. It was extremely labor intensive but overall very enjoyable! It’s been over 10k mi and still dry! I will attemp to post a few pics but not sure if it will work.

hi guys, I encountered the same problems. My car is 2011 X5 M. leaked oil from the front differential. I guess it's the problem of the upper oil pan and the lower oil pan.I would like to see more information and photos from you. Thank you everyone.

I’m going to attempt to share some pics here. I’ve never posted pics here so I’m unfamiliar with the process. Maybe this will work.

Pics worked for me, thanks.

How long did it take you, and did follow a manual, or just wing it?

I had about 28hrs total in the job with the occasional help of my dad for the times I needed more hands. Like anything else, having been through it once now, I could easily cut that time in half if I had to repeat the process. I am certainly not a professional mechanic but I can find my way around a wrench. With that said, this was a pretty big job for me at this time in life! I did not follow a manual. I did spend quite a bit of time researching different aspects of the job as there is not a lot of info out there for this kind of work on the S63 or even the N63 for that matter. I was able to find torque specs for most of it. I’m always a believer in applying the correct torque to any fastener but especially when your installing an aluminum fastener into aluminum.

Glad the pics worked! Sorry for the quality....

Thanks for your information. your works is great! I admire your skills very much. I removed my engine shield today , found front of the upper and lower oil pans are leaking. I inquired BMW KSD, replace upper oil pans needed 93 TPU unit of billing time!! OMG in China,1 TPU=5 min=8.1 USD

I was wondering if it would work by fastening all the bolts to the 27Nm required by the original factory, because I found that the oil pan cushion is completely metal, not rubber. secondly, in BMW's ETK, the oil pan cushion have not been updated, but the bolt was replaced with a new model with self-locking function. or just replace the new bolts?

If I am remembering correctly, Roadshow BMW here in TN quoted 15hrs labor to do the job. I don’t know if that if for one tech or two. I’m not familiar with how they figure their time.

As for tightening all the bolts, I attempted to tighten all I could see when I noticed the leak. It did not help at all. You can easily tighten all the lower pan bolts but you can only get to a few of the upper pan bolts without removing the lower pan and the front differential.

Since the gasket material has not been updated, I am hoping the updated “locking” fasteners will make it last longer as I would rather not be repeating the process in 60-70k mi!

Thanks,important info.

I will try to replace the new bolts on the upper oil pan , but only replace as many bolts as possible without removing pan. Because the lower oil pan is easy to replace, I will replace the gasket and replace the new bolts. hope it will work.

Ugh - this sucks. My local shop just started on the upper. Just found the leak in my garage last week. Figuring 10+ hours of labor.

I'm sorry to hear that, I went for a multipoint inspection it came back with the gasket issue, still under warranty as I extended it 2 more years so, at the end of the month I'm in big kaka if something like this comes up. I was told it's a $3000 job but, the invoice showed like $700.i just run to the car and drove away as fast as possible before asking why the change.

My lower pan on my ‘10 X5M is leaking pretty bad with evidence that my upper is too but was going to just do the lower to see how bad the leak really is. Anything special I need to know before removing and replacing the lower pan? Is it just the new gasket and bolts? What the torque on the bolts?
