So took my x5 to the dealer for a water pump and a leaking oil filter housing. Engine has been flawless otherwise no noises and or strange things happening that would slide to something like this otherwise.

Was driving home and got a yellow heat warning pulled off the road and ran codes and got a water pump error. Towed to the dealer and engine would run fine and strong. After the tear down the thermostat still had the wax plug intact so they said no overheating happened. And reused the thermostat

Anyway dealer replaced parts flushes coolant system new oil change took it outside to test drive and stalled it 3 times and got it back to the service bay ran codes found none took it back out and blew the motor, giant black puff of smoke, chained it back to the dealer.

Oil serviced every 5k miles all fluids changed and was very keen on maintenance. They tried to blame my high mileage of 155k but they quickly backtracked.

Their asking BMW for a good will as it's a 17k dollar fix.

What do you guys think I should do?

I figure the car gave the mechanic 3 hail marries something was wrong and got it back to the dealer it should have never been driven a Second time as something was wrong, and the decision to take it out a second time was on them.

They did give me this paper where it showed mechanic took it out stalled it and took it out again and blew it.

Keep records of every small detail

Wait to see if BMW covers it

If BMW doesn't cover it, contact a lawyer

Sorry to hear about this

I remember reading u comment in 35i reliability thread few weeks ago how rock solid u car is at 155k miles.

who knew!

anyway I hope they'll take it off u hands or u'll get a new engine on them, either way its gonna suck and probably gonna take some time until its all resolved.

I hope it works out for u and keep us updated!

If they take it off your hands and give you a great deal on another one or something, could really work out for everyone

Lol I know right!!!

CURSE YOU MURPHY !!!!!!!!

was just telling my friend last week how well it's been doing, Then BAM!

But hey the water pump defied the normal 75k death lol.

But I have a feeling it's only dead because of something they did.

A few E90 people have had N55 issues immediately after oil filter housing gasket replacement. The crank does not get oil and it freezes up.

Even though resale has really tanked on these, you’re going to take an additional hit when you have to provide a story about the engine to a buyer, even if the engine is newer. These engines are bulletproof, provided that they are serviced competently.

Why? A new engine is appealing to potential buyers.

Because a new engine always leads to questions:
  • Why was a new engine needed
  • How did it happen
  • Is there anything else that is at risk of blowing up?
  • How do I believe the owner even though he has a complete history?
  • How do I know the car wasn't trashed during its ownership?
Not really disagreeing with you; more concurring with the previous post.

Damn, this sucks bigly. Fingers crossed that BMW and the dealer step up and straighten this out to your satisfaction. I know you've put your heart into the car via some very nice mods, so I understand why this would be a particularly painful experience for you.

Not unless it was replaced where the owner had abused the vehicle... I'd say a new engine in this case a bigly plus

Agree. I have new turbos and new transmission (49K). plus all recalls/filtered air ducts/thrust bearings on 66K mileage X5M I just picked up. Definitely a big plus for me. For a 155K mileage vehicle, even more so.
