Rikkem's 2011 x5m

Hello!
This is a small log of my car. I apologize for my English, I do not have much practice.

For 10 years I drove Evo4, Mazdaspeed3, Mazdaspeed6, Evo8, Evo7, EvoX.

3 years ago I wanted a more practical car, but I did not want to lose much fun. And I bought my first BMW. It was 2008 X6 50i.

For 2 years of ownership, I repaired the engine, install downpipes, flashed stage2, installed front and rear from X6M (it has 3.91 gear ratio vs 3.64 on 50i), cooling system from X6M, X6M brakes, XHP software to gearbox.

But the car was not fast enough. Best 0-60 was 4.9sec, 1/4 mile was 13.3sec

In November 2017 I found an advertisement for the sale of 2011 X5M at a very pleasant price. I quickly sold my X6 and on the same day I bought a X5M. The car was completely stock, with the exception of the AKRAPOVIC exhaust.

In the first place, it was necessary to repair small defects. Partitions of the motor shield were broken, replaced them with new ones. I replaced the injectors for the last 12 revision. I took off and washed the radiator, install the cold running thermostats on the oil and antifreeze, that would extend the life of the valve seals.

While we have frosts (-40C) and I almost do not use the car, I bought RS downpipes. Gotta get them in a couple of days. I wrap them with a thermo-tape and install.

Forgive me for not writing for a long time, flew to the US and made a small trip to the western part of the country. While riding a Honda Civic, it's just a torture) After X5M on the frive is very difficult to accelerate)
For a couple of months I settled in Salt Lake City, if there is anyone from the forum, I'll be glad to talk.

Before leaving I installed downpipes. Before that, there were factory pipes with knocked out catalysts. Now the sound has become simply gorgeous!
When installing, wrapped new downpipe thermal tape, unfortunately it is 4-layer and looks very bad. But it protects well!

For the summer I bought wheels from the new X5M, style 612. It's very interesting to look them at car, but did not manage fit it before the flight.

Stock thermostats both opened at 105C. This cooling thermostat opened at 85C, oil opened at 90C.

These are original thermostats with changed characteristics. Allow to reduce the operating temperature of the oil from 105-110 degrees to 90-95.
This extends life of oil seals.

Oil gauge on dash lies, look photo.

Water temp is not the same as oil temp.

Here's how they both behave under WOT.

I know that this is different. The temperature of the water drops under WOT because in the thermostat there is an additional heater opening thermostat exactly under WOT.

For change thermostats 2 reasons:
1. 95% of the time the engine does not work under WOT, but in modes 0-30% of the throttle. In this mode with the factory thermostat will be 225 degrees, and with tuning thermostats will be 200 degrees. In my experience, a decrease in temperature by 25 degrees during 95% of the operation increases the life of the oil seals by about 3 times.

2. Under WOT, oil and water will have a starting point from 200 degrees and not from 225. And after a couple of accelerations, the oil temperature will increase to 210-215 degrees and not to 230-235.

I have legs, but they are unfortunately on a computer in Russia.

I can describe the words in words.
1. Water thermostat without oil. The oil heats longer, but with active accelerations it heats up to 110 ° C (230 ° F)
2. Oil thermostat without water. In general, there is no difference. Logs are 95% identical to the stock. Hot water heats the oil.
3. Both thermostats. Water 90-95C (195-203F) degrees, in traffic can be heated to 98C (208F). Oil 95-97 C (203-205F), in very slow traffic can be heated to 104C (220F), but as soon as you pick up the speed drops to 95-97.
With two thermostats, even with a very long active ride, I did not see the oil temperature above 108 С (225F). But it must be 20min hard pulling.

Changing from gutted stock cats to aftermarket wrapped cats changed the sound of the exhaust? I've got mine apart at the moment to make the same changes.

You have part numbers for the cooler thermostat?

The only reason I'm swapping them out is because I got an aftermarket set from a friends friend who sold his X5M and I got them for $200 shipped. I wrapped them in exhaust wrap and then my buddy just texted me to LMK that my S63TU headers are done being ceramic coated...they're not going on until I upgrade turbos though.
