Sun-glasses holder FINALLY!!
All right... I'm sure I wasn't the only one that was surprised and annoyed by the fact that BMW completely ignored the fact that we all need sunglasses at some point. Living in Alabama, it's sunny most days, so we need it all the time. Well, they must have forgotten to install one in their vehicles, and even though I love my E70 diesel but could not stand not having a place to put my glasses.
First started out with one of those clip-on ones... I hit my head in that thing I don't know how many times, and with my 5'4" I can't really be called tall. So, I started searching. It took me a little bit, but finally come across a BMW factory sun-glass holder for the X1, that can be swapped out for the driver side grab bar. (OEM BMW Part #: 51164862873), paid $43 and some change at the dealership. The parts guy was surprised when I told him what I wanted, he said, he haven't even heard of this! Also told me to let him know how it works so he can spread the word. How different can the grab bars be on the X1 and the X5... probably not that much, right?! RIGHT! They are EXACTLY the same. SO... very happy to report that now I'm a proud owner of a sun-glass holder in my E70! Here are some pics. The holder comes in Beige, Grey and Black. The installation took all about 5 minutes, all you need is a #20 TORX bit and you're set! The holder comes with it's own screws, but they were a tad short, so we just went with the one we took out from the grab handle, and voila...! |

Nicely done. Curious as to how big of a pair of sunglasses will fit.

I have "girl glasses" so they're not very thin.... here are some pics, I hope it helps! With my glasses in, it doesn't close quite all the way, there's a tiny gap, but you know what, it doesn't bother me a bit
The last pic is with my glasses in it. |

Not sure why they didn't show up in my last post... but here are the pics of the light... here's the link from amazon, they're $30 for a set, if you want it in the back doors too, you need two sets of course : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o04_s00

As for the glasses holder, looks good! Just went to the dealer to order one for myself, should be here within the next week. Now I have a place to store my driving specs |

Yeah, I found it on Amazon for $12 also (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L26Q81Q/...I3ND1X1NPIFYAR) the ones I've got were a present so not sure how much those cost...
Let me know how your glass holder turns out and if you like it! So far, I'm loving it!!! |

I may consider this, as that grab handle is pretty useless where it's positioned anyway.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks BluBMW,
I have just fitted a black sunglasses holder into the roof of my Xdrive 40d here in the UK. I gave up looking for one last year and put up with rooting around in the side pocket for my sunglasses when driving. So, this is great and makes a great car even better. Cheers, AJP |

Kerrazy, sorry that this option won't work for you... it's pretty stupid of BMW not to have a built in already for sure!
heatmizr & ajp558 Your welcome! I was so happy to find it and even happier to share coz I know what a PITA it is not to have one! Spread the word |

What the heck are those black nylon straps for, that are pierced by the screws?
They don't look like they do anything.

My guess is they keep the pieces together in case the hinges are broken. Not sure why it's needed, maybe some safety requirement.
BTW, grey holder part #51164862872, ~$35 at my dealer. |
