2011 E70 X5 50i Valve Stem Seals
Hi
I purchased my car in 2017 August with 60k miles from BMW of Roxbury in New Jersey, without warranty.... at that time i thought i am spending 23k USD and taking 6k-7k extended warranty for only 2 years its not worth it... was i wrong? maybe... I was driving my E46 330ci from 2001 from 2007 to 2017 10 years and didn't have any major problems, sold it with 180k miles on it and i thought its time to change to something bigger and i did ended up with this wonderful BIG problem car. Car is lovely I do not drive much recently overall i only did 23k miles in 3 years now I am at 83,000. Few months after I bought the car i noticed that my car required extra oil, so knowing from the past I went to BMW dealer ask them what oil I need bought 5w30 few bottles and just were adding it roughly 1QT every 700-800 miles, I thought that this is normal for such a big engine and it didn't bother me too much, no leaking no problem, even the guy who was selling me oil was like "its normal, its normal" recently it becomes 1QT every 300 miles .... but whats bother me the most is that smoke when car is idle.... this is just way too much, sometimes in winter when i start my car and then jump in 10 minutes later i am sitting in chimney. I did some research about BANG lawsuit and BMW north America settling it, i read some posts here and there and some people claimed they had it replaced and some were charged with $8,000, I called my local shop that specialize in BMW they said $4500 some random guy on craiglist say $2500. What should I do? whats my option? Do i have any chance being covered by CCP N63? I will be dropping my car maybe this week for Air Bag recall and want to know whats my options... should I tell them to do Oil consumption test? I seriously don't know what to do. Anybody know some professional mechanic in New Jersey that can perform that repair for $2,000-$2,500 ? Hope everyone is well, thanks for any help and information. Mike |

I got my 2011 50i done for Valve Stem Seals replacement just a few months ago at a BMW dealer
It was done for free under the Bang settlement. They tested it for smoking and oil consumption and did it for free along with lot of other replacements for wear and tear items at on the parts costs. Yours will be eligible for free replacement too. |

Update : BMW dealer said that replacing steam seals valves not going to solve the issue due to cylinders being eggshell form? LOL
Offered to replace engine if I pay 45% of the cost in this case it would be around $5600-$6000, I guess this is the new way of not doing any job at all, who would be so smart to put 6k in N63 after being burned one time? I spoke to few BMW mechanics and ALL OF THEM said that this is simply not true and if there is no problem with the car other that smoke and oil consumption there is no need to replace the engine... But again this is the new way of getting rid of people of having their steam valves fixed. There is a mechanic in NY-SI, he said he can do the valves for 3300, since I do not drive much, maybe 80 miles a week, I will just keep adding oil and at some point just get those valves done for 3k and sell the car. I been driving BMW 15 years and this is it for me. Ford will be my next choice, at least I will sleep good at night and do not need to carry $3,000 with me Everytime I want to drive X5 to buy groceries.... $80,000 mistake. |

Sorry it did not workout for you.
But I would hardly trust a cowboy mechanic to do the Valve Stem Seals , a job which takes about 40 hrs of labor; to be done for 2-3k. Dealer is lying. Ask them to document their oil consumption findings and their recommendation that new valve stem seals won’t help. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...65276-9999.pdf Calling the BANG lawyers and complaining seemed to have worked for some. |

Mmm.
So a common issue is for the cylinder walls to get scored from the immense carbon build up that bad valve stem seals can cause. It’s actually a common issue as well. They can be checked by running a camera in through the spark plug hole. If the cylinder walls are scored it’s a gamble if reboring and replacing pistons will fix the car. Better to replace the engine. Of course the indys if they’re competent will check this as well. Here’s Hooveys Run in with bad valve stem seals and the resulting piston wall scoring. I know it’s not the same engine, but the problems remained. If the cylinder walls are fine . Fix it. |

You would be lucky to get a new V8 engine for 6k $$
And installed by BMW and not a cowboy Egg shell cylinders is the scoring of walls with excessive carbon deposits which negates any valve stem seal repair. |
