I had an epiphany today when looking at your engine bay pics... It dawned on me to use oval 90 horizontal piping straight out of the turbos and back toward the firewall. Cutting oval holes in the plastics close to where the hood affixes and run the oval tubing through there. Then use a 45 or 60 degree silicone joiner to then affix an air filter right by the windshield on either side.

Either that or install a conical enclosed filter right at the factory boots and run tubing with circular cutouts to those same spots.

I'm not too concerned with waterlogging the filters if they were front mounted, as your headed towards, because of the use of water socks, but I feel like air at the cowl might prove even lesser a risk and still get the same effect as air outside the engine bay.

Thoughts anyone?

I mean that would run your piping right over the major heat source in the engine, the turbos and downpipes... I think you might as well just throw some filters on short ram style how I have mine currently and save yourself some money.

No matter how you do it, for me it's just about the noise, I want to hear the turbos. To do that, you need some longer piping that you don't have in the short ram, you don't really hear them much with that setup. If I can pick up a few hp along the way too, with the noise, why not.

Filter is pretty big in there still. I'm thinking to make this fit right, some cutting might be necessary. Not sure if that's worth it for when I go to sell it someday. I wish I knew the model and size of the RK filters, but there is still some hope of making these fit. Going to take everything to my shop and see what we can do. I'll update soon...

See if the filter you have has a model/SKU identifying number anywhere on it. If it does, let me know where it is, and I'll pull my filter that came with RKs intake and get that number to you.

EDIT:
Never mind all that...RKs intakes come with the K&N RC-5000...you may still have to do some minor cutting as I did....

Hey, thanks so much for this info! Might need to get a set and see if they fit better than these!

The new filters arrived! Thanks for the recommendation, with the silicone couplers I bought, the filters fit perfect, nice and snug! I have an appt at the shop on Monday for them to cut and weld!

Finally got them done... not the prettiest welds. I'm going to have a body shop clean them up and paint them. Sound and work great though. Need to get some socks for them.

Parts list-

eBay has the cheapest ones-

2x 3-3.5" silicone elbows

2x 3.5" straight couplers

1x 3-3.5" reducer coupler

2x K&N RC-5000-
K&N RC-5000 High Performance Universal Clamp-on Chrome Air Filter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00062YP62..._6OlABbB600704

Oval mandrel bent piping-
https://www.cxracing.com/stainless-s...-VERTIx1-ADPx2

https://www.cxracing.com/stainless-s...-90-OVAL-VERTI

(Notice the first link has the two round to oval pieces... So you'll only need one second 90.)

So everything shipped is well under $400, and then whatever the shop charges you to do it. I'm sure others can accomplish this cheaper, this is just how I did it.

Interesting. I was looking at the same oval 90* from that place. I guess the bend doesn't fit the angle without cutting. My worry is do you think the heat will affect the air when the engine is at temp? That piping will get pretty hot.

I was also considering a 3-3.5" 90* silicone hose and squeezing it thru the duct opening so I don't have to cut it. It should flatten enough without pancakeing and starving the intake of air.

The only issue I see with that is that the hood is so light you would have to push it shut pretty hard and it may not sit even... looking at my setup, I wish they did the cuts differently and made it more aesthetically appealing. I guess I can save for the RKs in the meantime.

Sounds a bit louder, you can hear the turbos sucking air and the blow off a lot louder it seems. Seat of pants is just a bit crisper throttle mostly, but nothing too much power wise. You can definitely hear the turbos and a lot of whoosh, which is all I wanted really. I'm getting further and further from luxury and more towards a tuner car by sound standards, but I'm used to that.

I think I might sell these and spring for a set of RKs. If anyone has any interest in them, let me know!

In my point of view, not worth the crazy price. Unless your going with turbo upgrade and DPs etc etc

so the price is still crazy? just curious!
anything helps even if there are no turbo updates or DPs but I agree if the price is very high probably not best investment.

my half scoops works very well - aesthetically speaking

I am sure I read somewhere that these engines don't gain much with intakes unless your going turbo upgrades, I could be wrong but I'm very sure I was reading about this.

The RK ones dyno'd at 25 additional hp... really I did it for the turbo spook sound and blow off... call me a ricer, but I had a built STi and missed the sounds.

I don't have them, I have the custom ones I had made. That was made with no other mods or tune it says on the RK site. There was a battle thread with another intake vendor and it the dyno run was made to refute some claims.
