EXTRA Sound when shifter moved --> M/S mode DISABLED

* * * EDITED To Add UPDATE Below * * *

Hey all,
You know that sound the shifter makes when you shut off the car in Sport or Manual, and it moves the shift lever over to Drive by itself?

Is it supposed to make that noise at any other time? Like when manually switching it back to Drive from Sport or Manual?

For some reason it seems like my shifter is making that noise in more other scenarios than it used to... or early Alzheimer's is setting in.

(Sorry I searched this, you can imagine how many times 'sound' or 'noise' comes up...)

* * * UPDATED * 6/19/19 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

So this has now begun to manifest itself as NO sound sometimes when moving the shifter, AND three times now my Manual/Sport shift mode has been Disabled - meaning, I can't move the shifter LEFT out of regular Auto mode. It drives ok in Drive though. The first couple times it went back to normal next time I drove it. But this morning I tried pulling over and putting it in PARK, to see if it would 'reset' and it didn't make the regular noise or move the shifter at all, just went into P, and same issue remained. I shut engine off and restarted to see if that would help, but again it stayed the same.

I am guessing the solenoid that assists the shift lever movement or a sensor telling the system where the shift lever is, is going bad or gone bad.
No error messages on the iDrive.

Let me clarify...
Last night I moved the shifter to R, it made the normal and expected "chink" sound. One second later as I was releasing the brake and starting to roll, it made the sound A SECOND TIME.

I do not think this is normal.

It does it occasionally and in similar situations, in addition to the normal and expected "chink".

Its sporadic, it could take me 20 tries to capture it. Its simply an additional, identical sound to the normal one, but ~1sec after the shifter movement with expected sound has completed, with no additional input/shifter movement.

Happened again. I started the vehicle after work, and a couple secs later it made the shifter chunk sound before I touched anything.

Guess I'll have the dealer check it when I get the Takata recall done.

Hi there
Got your PM

I changed my coil spring cartridge beneath the steering wheel and that solved my issue right away.
Good luck.

Thanks, I know I dragged you over here from Xoutpost... and your issue was more around the paddle shifters...
Since I do not have those I am thinking mine is more an issue with shifter lever itself or something connected to it.
Appreciate you coming by !

Interestingly, after 2-3 days of nothing, my shifter started functioning properly again this morning half way to work.

Does that TIS website let you diagnose by searching on issues presented?
I am having little luck finding this issue experienced or discussed. May need to try the 550i forum.

I forgot to add my final update here:
The intermittent noise and M/S mode disable continued to get more frequent until M/S was locked out completely.

Back July I ordered a replacement used shifter from a similar year X5 50i in a junkyard and had it shipped to me. I swapped them and all returned to normal and no programming was needed.
