2011 e70 X5 40d Transfer case problem
Hello,
Looking for some advice how to troubleshoot further and diagnose my transfer case problem on my 2011 e70 X5 40d with ATC 450 transfer case. Have the 4x4! and DSC error Light. Scanned with ista and have the following errors: 005226 Transfer box VTG initial calibration missing 005227 Transfer box VTG calibration faulty 5F3A Dsc Transfer case malfunction. Currently only operating in rwd due to this error. The actuator is the newer model on the ATC 450 transfer case so the plastic worm gear issue doesn't apply. I have tried to recalibrate with ista I can't remember the exact wording but the process fails . Have removed the actuator from transfer case and started vehicle and can confirm it moves so I'm thinking the actuator is not the problem. Next step was going to open transfer case and change clutch packs but I have no jolting , shuddering or strange noise so I'm skeptical that this would be the issue ? Can anyone advise how I could diagnose this issue further ? Thanks |

Change fluid then run the calibration.

Different model, but on my E83, I first replaced the plastic gear which was clearly worn, but could not get it to calibrate with ISTA. Regardless, it seemed to be functional. I eventually grew tired of the failure to calibrate and removed the actuator to test its functionality. Putting 12V to it, it seemed to operate properly, so I was puzzled.
I had run across a post somewhere where the guy said he had tested several actuators similarly, but could sometimes never get them to calibrate properly. Only a new actuator solved it. So, I went the cheap route and found a low mileage used actuator from a Range Rover (same part). I tested it beside my current actuator applying 12V, and the "new" actuator spun much more freely and faster. After installing it, ISTA had no problem with the calibration function, and I've been good since. I'm not familiar with your "new" style actuator, but another option might be to disassemble the motor and clean/lube so that it spins more freely. Hope that helps. AM. |
