Battery replacement - computer required?

My 2013 is still on its original battery. Due to the Covid lockdown it’s been sitting for months without being driven - now I’m getting “high battery drain” warnings.

It’s happened enough times, even after some long drives, that I think the battery has to be replaced.

Can I simply swap the battery or is this a process that needs a computer/BMW service/etc?

as long as battery specs are the same or almost the same no coding needed but you need let the car know that its a new battery to avoid overcharging etc and you ll need a OBD scanner for it..

I am about to change my battery on my 2013 X5. How do I let the car know it is a new battery? An OBD scanner it will allow me to do this? Any particular one you recommend?

I have the same issue from the same reasons. My battery is dead and will not accept a charge.

Requires a scan tool. A Foxwell NT520 works for me: ~$160. Picked that based on research related to this exact topic.
Pretty sure a Carly app with the right dongle will get the job done for less cash.

The problem with the foxwell tool is your battery replacement has to have the same specs as the current registered battery. All it can do is say "hey there's a new battery!"

I found mine through auto zone, it's a duralast h8-agm and used my foxwell scan tool to register it

I use Carly through my phone and their dongle. I think you can pay for just the battery feature vs the entire app. All of the features in the app I think can be bought ala carte.

Pretty sure you’re correct regarding most scan tools. However, if you get the right one (read as: spend enough), you can adjust any changes in specs. Nearly certain mine shows that feature or function, though I didn’t need to as I matched OE specs with the replacement.
