Engine Malfunction after Velos tune

Recently did a Velos stage 2 tune, on my 2013 X5M. Vehicle has 48k miles. Now I'm consistently getting an Engine Malfunction, at around 120 MPH, under WOT, but I don't read any codes or faults. Anyone else had this problem? Thanks.

What are you using to read codes? A BMW specific scanner or plain OBDII?

Jeez how often do you go 120?

In any case, get a good scan tool...protool is good.

The code reader is BMW specific. It's a Schwaben. I can read OBDII codes and BMW faults.
I failed to mention earlier, when I stop, turn the car off and back on, everything is clear. No problems until I drive it hard again.
I'm pretty sure the coil packs are original, so i ordered some new ones. Already installed NGK plugs.

I go 140 often enough to make sure the car is running good, especially with the new tune. This car should handle it easy. I also take it to the track occasionally.

Have fun chasing this problem, I did it for a long time research my threads and posts and you will find what needs to be done to fix it could be a lot of things almost never threw a code

I bet you can trigger this without going 120mph btw, start in 3rd or 4th at about 4500 and WOT might cause it to trigger

I read your thread. Good stuff. My take away from it was, that I need to focus on the vacuum lines. Vehicle only has 48k miles on it, but it's 7 years old. So...

And I'll try the 4500 a couple of times, just to see. So far it's been pretty consistent at that 120 mark though. Since I got the tune I have ran it through the 1/4 mile and 60 to 120 mph a number of times, just to record some numbers and see what it would do.

Thanks! Any help is appreciated

Yeah, without fault codes it’s a bit of a guessing game.

Typically engine malfunction will throw a fault code (mine always did). This will narrow it down a ton.

Vacuum lines can be tested with a smoke test

Generally these things break in no particular order
Pcv lines
Filtered air ducts
Boost leaks
Map sensors
Pneumatic pressure converters for turbos
Plugs
Coils
Injectors
Diverter valves
Etc.

Tune is pushing a marginal component too far. You may need to change plugs and regap for the tune....

P.s. I’ve replaced all of these items on my car at various times chasing the limp dick mode.... er engine malfunction reduced power...

I could on mine trigger it while towing.

Map sensors and pneumatic pressure converters were the cause of the latest round of headaches for me. Only showed up while towing, which puts the car under high constant load, it’s like running the car at full throttle for minutes at a time.

Ok, finally got a code indicating a faulty wastegate pressure converter (driver's side). Replaced the converter and coils. Problem solved. Should have done one at a time, but I was in a hurry. Thanks for the input guys.

Did the code happen under power or near idle? I had a similar code in off idle conditions that turned out to be the filtered air ducts / CCV system. They had multiple leaks/cracks and were letting in unmetered air, pretty common issue with these trucks.

It's back. Now im getting codes 310B and 30ff. Can't find anything through visual inspection. Ordered new vent pipes and vacuum hose. Haven't ordered the filtered air ducts yet. Looks like they're about $250 each. Problem always occurs around 120 mph at near WOT.

For me it was new plugs and coils. Make sure to get the Eldor coils (not Bosch).

I already had replaced the CCV tubes and some other vacuum lines.

I had no misfire or limp mode with stock tune, but it would misfire under WOT once I applied the Velos tune. I did the plugs and coils and it's been good.

002B1A, misfire on cylinder 5. It would go away after I turned off the car, but would come back if I went WOT.

I honestly think its the Velos Tune. This is happening to mine too. I changed air filtered ducts, all 3 vent lines, Changed all coils to Eldor Coils, changed to step colder NGK plugs gapped to .022 and fault code shows up at wot between 3-4 and 4-5 gear everytime I put pedal to the floor. Cars in shop now for replacement of all 4 Map sensors, and taking out old vacuum lines for new silicon vacuum lines. I also asked for a gas or pressure test to see WTF is going on. Weird thing is gunning it in 1st gear and 2nd gear full wot car performs fine with no codes....

Obviously a canned tune is going to react differently on different engines, but I have had the Velos stage 2 tune on my X5M for around 40K miles. Driving it at high altitude, 91 octane gas.
The only times I have had reduced power issues have been from the check valves in the fresh air vents having issues, or the seal on the inlets to the turbos getting hard and loose. I have had to do those twice now.

so my mechanic called me replaced all map sensors and vent lines. He did a pressure test and car is solid no leaks he said. Havent gotten car back as im waiting on a emergency parking brake actuator to come in to be replaced. Once I get car back I will let you know if the sensors made any difference or if the code is gone. I also reached out to velos and they will take a look at tune see if anything looks out of the ordinary.

Eduz,

So your still on stock tune and its running fine?Thats my next step until i get car back to see is the map sensors do it for me. I already replaced the coils to Eldor coils, spark plugs NGK, air filtered duct all vent lines and vacuum lines..

i reached out to Velos to see if the tune can be looked at told them everything i replaced.

It's running great on the tune now (after changing the coils and plugs).

The extra power of the tune can expose weaknesses on the vehicle...sounds like you've replaced most of the common failure points. Hopefully the sensors do the trick.
