n63 Misfire

good afternoon ladies and gentlemen,

So in January I had a exhaust VANOS solenoid go out, I replaced that ran fine for a week or two, and then riding into work one day, solid misfire out of nowhere.

Puled codes and have an active p0306, cylinder number 6 misfire. I ripped apart the cowling and the air filter housings, and did a 3 cylinder swap of the plugs and the packs to isolate if it is an ignition problem. The code stayed on cylinder 6.

I assume the injector has gone bad, but I have no way to know for sure, and I am just not a fan of throwing parts. I believe I have hit the limitation of the scan tool I have for troubleshooting (anyone with ISTA in the DMV area?) is there anything I can do to isolate the injector? I am going to pull the #6 spark plug, and bore scope the cylinder to see if there are any valve issues, or damage to the piston, but I doubt that as the misfire

I do have an older OTC Genisys (https://www.otctools.com/products/ge...vo®-obd-ii-kit) I could break out that has the 2014 European update on it. Anyone use these to drill into the new BMW stuff?

Let me know guys, I have been dailying my e34 to DC, witch other then a sight bump in MPG has left a lot to be desired

Thanks

I had a similar issue and changed all plugs (BOSCH but not BMW logo) , coils but the problem persisted.

Took it to BMW and they charged me for plugs before diagnosing any further and turned out to be 2 injectors.

Just some food for thought if you do decide to change the plugs and on taking it to a dealer

It doesn't need plugs. Thanks for the heads up. I would refuse that kind of work, that is just poor diagnostics.

I found out the inject warranty is actually 10 years 150,000 miles. I thought it was only 120,000 miles. I am going to take it to the dealer this week.

The injector warranty is 10 years 120,000 miles. I am not in it obviously. Tomorrow I will pull the plug and check the top of the piston, and see if I can see the valves with a borescope. Lets see how it goes

Called the local BMW dealer, as I suspected the injector warranty is 10 years/120,000 miles. So the repair is all on me.

Oh well, I got a line on a cheap injector I may throw in

we shall see how it goes.

Do you have index 12 injectors? Curious on your replacement- you are just changing the one with a new or used ?

no idea. I am going with a used one, yes. I still have to bore the cylinder and see if I can see any visual damage. I could also do a leak down test if need be. That may be tricky with where the truck is sitting.

You’re going to need ista or something higher up like foxwell to code your new injectors.
So why not get ista first and run an injector test. Cheaper and far better troubleshooting pinpoint.
Not sure where you live or the vehicle had lived (salt belt) but a special injector puller tool is needed to remove them as some may be seized.

If you have N63 engine, make sure B0001314 is done on your car, aka "Customer Care Package" - all free

Customer Care Package:
- check the timing chain for stretch; replace if necessary
- check the following items and replace if necessary: fuel injectors, mass air flow sensors, crankcase vent lines, battery, engine vacuum pump, low pressure fuel sensor
- change the oil service interval to 12 months/10,000 miles

For S63 - they are only covering fuel injectors which I have BMW dealer to replaced mine

yes. It varies, but you can call a dealer, or BMW NA and find out for sure.

The first year I had the car I made sure this was done, it was.

Try having the variable valve solenoid recalibrated. When it gets off, it can cause the valves to not open properly and can cause misfire in the cylinders that have big carbon deposits on the valves thus limiting proper airflow to that cylinder.

the new vanos solenoid is on a different bank then the misfire. I have a hop that me beating on this thing has kept some of the carbon down. I would bet the motor has it throughout, but before the misfire it was running damn good.

Whenever this engine gets around to be rebuilt I am going to add water meth to avoid carbon deposits, AND gain me some power.

do you know if a foxwell hand held will code injectors?

So an update, I had the injector programmed in, the misfire is still there

the odd thing about the misfire is that after I warm the engine up, if I shut it down and restart it and take of quickly without letting it sit for a while, the misfire will stay away if I keep the engine above 2,000 RPMS. That is kind of weird. I am considering taking it to a pro for diagnostics so I really don't have the support, knowledge and backing to dig to deep into this.

I believe the thought of an issue with carbon might be the problem. Were I to actually have a burned valve, a bottom end issue or a VANOS problem I don't think it would clear up with keeping it above 2,000 RPMS.

Anyone have any suggestions before it goes that route?
