Can you post a audio/video clip of the chatter you’re referring to? I’m curious..

When mine were doing it, it sounded just like a loose motorcycle/bicycle chain dragging and slapping around, could only hear it under deceleration at low speeds. I rebuilt the wastegates and it went away. (Don't recommended rebuilding, was a bitch, requires a welder and a hydraulic press)

Just let off the gas going about 25mph and if you hear the tap tap tap, it's more than likely the wastegates. Do it in a parking garage and it'll be more pronounced.

MisFire cyclinder 1

I replaced the down side O2s and all Spark Plugs. This cleared the O2 failure code but it still crapped the bed on full throttle and limped into CEL mode. MisFire in Cylinder 1 code came back. I assume I need to replace the coil. Two questions...Can I replace just one coil or should I replace all, and which cylinder is cylinder 1 geographically that is? The coils are 34$ a piece on BimmerWorld so its doesn’t break the bank to do all but I would rather pay 34$x1 over 34$x8.
Thanks for any advice

Ideally you should replace all coils and plugs at same time if you are DYI. Saves future misfire related issues. Also the labor to do just one coil/plug, you might as well do all. BTW I think Cylinder #1 is at the very front next to radiator on passenger side if I'm not mistaken. Something like:

1-2-3-4 FW Passenger
5-6-7-8 FW Driver

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

Thanks TO. I figured that would be the advice most folks would give. I ordered all 8 coils today. Hopefully I’ll have them by this weekend and I can install them on Saturday.

Gotcha. I think the S63's are worth having because even if they have the same problems the N63 has, its 150 more horsepower, so the juice is worth the squeeze. I am pretty sure I have bad valve seals in my cylinder head as my N63 eats a quart every 1,000. I just keep adding and dont sweat it. Eventually the cats will go bad and I will need to go to a catless downpipe, change to custom tuning or off the shelf that turns off the catalyst monitor. I almost wish this was a pushrod motor, then the seals could be done very easily with the cylinder heads on. You could do that with these motors, but the vanos, the cams, and the timing chains would all have to come off (I assume) to do the seals with the heads on, and that is not a small job

I had a chance to drive a 2016 X5M..amazing. Felt more like a car than my current X5 but prices still too high at the moment. I just can't say it enough but the N63, had I had done some research first, I probably would have considered the S63 E70. And what's up with these $25 spark plugs? 12-point socket? I had to buy a socket to do this job. Ahh I miss the good old BMW days..

Ya that's the 20 dollar per plug tax for the BMW logo...you can get the Bosch equivalent without the BMW logo for about 6 bucks a plug. You have to shop around for the best price and never go to the dealer unless you like getting reamed...for example, turbo return gasket...this thing is the size of your thumb, just a little gasket...12.99 from the Dealer, 3.99 from Autohausaz...Coils, 90 bucks from the dealer, 40 dollars for the good Eldors (not those cheap ass Solvenia Bosch units that are everywhere). BMW figured If your fancy enough to own a n63, then you won't wallet rape so ya gotta go anywhere but the dealer if at all possible

I Just got coils in the mail from BimmerWorld. I thought they were the correct ones but the paper that came in the box lists the N62 and S63tu and some others but it doesn’t list the N63. I assume they will work. Does anyone know if my assumption is correct? I guess I can send them back and get the other ones that say N63. My wife is beating me up about her car not working so Id rather install the ones I have on hand instead of waiting another week or more to get the others. I guess I could pay an outrageous fee and have them next delivered.

Check the part # for your vehicle at realoem.com and compare it with what’s on the box. I’d only install if the p/n matches.

BimmerWorld says they can’t guarantee they will work because when they search by vehicle model it doesn’t show these for the X5 50i. But it may work because they show up under different vehicles that have the same engine.

I got my plugs and coils from Pelican. Good prices. Often you can get OEM that makes parts for BMW at a fraction of price. My dealer wanted something like $85 for coils and $25 for plugs. For the replacement service they quoted me something in the neighborhood of $2000.

has anyone gone to a colder plug and used an Autolite XP 5682? I ideally want to use the NGk's but they cost twice as much.

Just did the job yeasterday. It took me 7 hours. But I had a coil pack break apart at the base. That took an hour for just that one plug.

That sounds like a terrible situation.

Read the notes in my DIY on POST #15, they are close but not exactly same.

"However there were some differences on the N63:
- Fold away black bulb over the spark plugs - This did not exist on N63
- Remove the coolant reservoir tank - This did not apply on N63
- Also, I had to remove a few other bits..."

I'd get the NGK 95770 for stock S63 and NGK 97506 for tuned E70.

Hi all! I recently purchased a 2011 X5 50i with 80k miles for a heck of a deal. This was before I discovered all the issues on the N63 engine. It needs a VANOS solenoid (according to the shop I had look at it).

That being said, they recommended replacing the plugs & coils, which I can do myself. However there seems to be a couple different price points for the coils. I found a set of 8 here for $199:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...-12131712219x8

Part numbers match what I found here, but the price difference gives me pause:
https://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/...il-12138616153

Anyone have any experience with the fcpeuro set?

Thank you!
