Questions about oil change.
Looking at doing an oil change for the first time as an owner of the e70. On my e39 I always used pennzoil 5w-30. However in the owners manual I see that bmw recommends anything from 0w-30 to 5w-40 for the n55. Which viscosity do yall use and would recommend for me to use?
FCP Euro has liquimoly, I'm thinking about ordering that. Anyone using it and how does it hold up? Got past 110k Miles this past weekend, thinking that pennzoil high mileage platinum would work best but I am open to suggestions. |

140k here, HIGHLY recommend liquimoly 5-40, link below. Toss in 1.5cans of the Mos2 additive also. You will notice smoother idle and cold starts as well as a minor but noticable mpg gain (about .5mpg). This is a true synth oil and can take the abuse. I have 30k on this oil changing it around 5 to 8k each time. Was running Castro and Pennzoil before.

Also using Liqui Moly 5w-40 and their additive. Good stuff. Averaged 18.5mpg over a 200 mile drive this week just seeing if there was improvement and I think there was.

Happy to help. Definitely not a must, it's just "icing on the cake" the biggest difference I noticed was with idle quality and startups, super smooth now without that mild yet noticable mechanical grinding sensation for the first split second and the little bump in mpg. It honestly feels a bit faster but that's probably just the placebo effect lol. The mpg Numbers don't lie though, I average 700-1000 miles a week often on the exact same roads with long stretches (100+ miles) without stopping and it's something I noticed right away. I average 19.8mpg overall (60/40 split city/hwy)and I usually cruise at 90+ (it's AZ, people drive 80 in the slow lane cause the heat down her does things to ya....)

Have only changed my oil once so far but I used Liqui Moly Ceratec for an additive. Not sure if BMW specifically recommends it but it certainly doesn't hurt. Anything that will reduce friction and as a result temperatures is beneficial. Didn't know about the MoS2 but if it does the same thing as the Ceratec it seems more cost effective.

Nope but then again BMW also says the oil only needs to be changed once every 12k or something silly and that the transmission oil is lifetime I've come to the conclusion that BMW is compromised of absolutely brilliant engineers and assholes from Mercedes posing as BMW engineers engaging in Sabotage....it's the only thing that can explain so much amazing engineering and so many stupid missteps in the same vehicle!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0119..._pd_title.html It's worth every penny, you will thank me later, makes filling the transmission a breeze and easy, the LAST thing you want is to be fumbling with some silly pump while your under it and engine is running, the exhaust pipe just waiting to burn ya all while trying to get that blasted last pint in. |

Basically babied it the whole way not really getting into boost but still averaged 60-80mph most of the way. Total for the 400 miles was 17.9mpg but I went manual mode through some snow on the way home.

That's excellent, I averaged that in my 35i for total of 700 miles. However I do have a leadfoot.

Any concerns about using 5W-30 provided it’s LL-01 spec? I only change 1x/yr, and half the year it’s cold. I figured 40W may be too heavy for the cold weather.

Edit: saw your other post and looks like I chimed in late. Next change I'd say go with 5w-40.

Not all brands of oil have the same specs for 0w-40. Mobil 1 0-40 is as thin as 30w. While castrol 0-40 is somewhat in the 40w category.
Whats more important is HTHS being no less than 3.5 is what makes it suitable for bmw or Germans. Liqui moly 5w-40 is really thick hence why most people notice smoother quieter. Read the specs for each company and pick your likings. If you must use high mileage oil for leaks, Mobil 1 10w-30 is your best bet, with 3.5hths, but I wouldn’t go over 5k miles. Pennzoil euro 0w-40 seems to be in middle and this is what Im using. |

I do know that now I see a lot more indy shops using their products. LM has been pushing harder in recent years to make their additives known.

I average 16...to 19mpg....so quite happy...but it is what it is...5/30, LL04...no additives. No oil consumed between oil changes....at 10,000Km intervals...
