Water/Coolant Pump Running after Engine Shutoff?

Finished a ~200 mile drive from SF to Lake Tahoe last night in the evening with no problems. Drove 3-4 miles today to a hardware store and when I got back, some sort of pump continues to run/shutoff/run again. Fully turned off after 5 mins or so. I turned the car back on 10 mins later, with no warning lights, Check Control was OK too. I notices some liquid on the ground inside the driver's front wheel which may be related?

Does anyone recognize this sound/issue? Can I drive in this condition 200 miles back to San Francisco before seeing my mechanic?

auxiliary cooling pump working after turning off the engine on operating temperature is normal.. it should work for 20-25mins, its cooling the turbos.. but in the vid the sound its making, is like mixed with some vibrating metal is not healthy if its not caused by some other loose parts in the engine bay.. so pump working is normal.. but the noise itself doesnt sound that healthy to me..

Like others have said, normal for it to run when turned off, just normally nearly silent so nobody notices it. The turbo water pump for N63 & S63 is under recall so check your VIN on BMW's recall site. It will make that noise also If it gets air in the system, check your turbo coolant lines and coolant level.

Coolant level was a bit below the plastic "Min" indicator in the reservoir. I filled up with distilled water for now. Didn't see any of the usual dry white residue that comes from a coolant leak in the engine bay, and nothing else looked abnormally wet or shiny. Car did not leak on the floor of the garage last night.

Thoughts on holding onto a gallon of distilled water for the 200 mi drive back home? Or should I definitely get a mechanic's eyes on it before that?

Sounds like that pump is shot if your not leaking any coolant. Touch the turbo coolant lines with your hand when its making this noise, if it is the pump you will feel the vibration in the coolant line. I would get it fixed as soon as you can, its not a bad job, would take the average mechanic a few hours to do max. I would get it fixed before the trip if you can, but it most likely wont hurt the turbos as long as you don't push it hard right before you shut down the engine. Until you get it fixed I would definitely bring a gallon of 50/50 water & BMW compatible coolant mix with you at all times just in case there is a leak somewhere.

Closing the loop here. Had a crack INSIDE the coolant reservoir along the the overflow tube that runs to the bottom of the tank. Replaced the expansion reservoir and all was good.

What was the clattering sound coming from though?
