2022 Mercedes AMG C63 - Hybrid 4 Cylinder
Car and Driver Source
Road and Track Source "Car and Driver spoke with Christian Früh, head engineer for the 2022 C-Class, to find out what sort of direction Mercedes plans to take the new mass-market flagship. While the platform will stay rear-wheel-drive-based, the V-6s and V-8s in the AMG models will be dropped in favor of hybridized four-cylinder power plants. C/D says the new C63, despite its 50-percent loss in cylinders, will still make over 500 horsepower." Of course it's a bold move, an intriguing one for sure.

Will be good for G80/82 sales. Sad to see them nix the 8 cylinder tho. Can't imagine the same clientele will be interested in the new C63 4 banger tho.
Enjoy the 6 and 8 ICE's while you can people

Interesting. Assuming there's a bit of trickle down R&D from their F1 division. It's going to be hard to replace the visceral AMG experience with this drivetrain.

Why would anyone by C63 over an M3 or RS5 Sportback (or even downsize to a CLA45) at the point? The V8 in a compact sedan was the only reason to buy it over the other Germans rivals.

exactly this. especially paired with the the terrible leasing rates and the arrogance one typically faces at the local MB dealership.

To be fair, if this car is getting the same turbo 4 out of the 45 series then I don't feel basic is a fair word to use. It's the most powerful production turbo 4.

Still not that monstrous V8, which appeals to their target market. Might as well buy an EV, they are arguable quicker. Same appeal of mechanical watch vs Apple watch, you either get it or you don't.

The thundering sound of a high performance V8 is what makes an AMG vehicle so intoxicating to drive. Yes the electrified turbo 4 will be faster but they are walking away from a classic AMG trait.

Drive any 4 cylinder engine and compare it to an inline 6 or V8 from the same manufacturer and it might produce the same hp but every other sensation from the sound, to smoothness, to powerband is a step down. Personally think the ICE trend is making EVs look better and better. Then with an EV everyone's is silent, smooth and fast enough, not seeing the powertrain characteristics mattering regardless of the manufacturer. Can BMW make a better electric motor than Ford?

This website:
https://jesmb.de/5729/ is claiming the exact setup is: C 63e 4matic+ Plug-in hybrid M139 (2,0 L) 449 PS + 40 PS ISG + 8 PS AMG e-Turbo + 204 PS electric motor (Edit: it looks like the revised the article since publication, removing mention of the ISG and e-Turbo.) However, even if that turns out to be correct, the output won't be the sum of those numbers, which is 701 PS. This is because the engine and motor will have different curves with different peak RPM, plus the ISG and e-Turbo may be supplemental "burst" power rather than sustained. At any rate, this is an aggressive move by AMG division. We'll see how it turns out for them. |

had two C63S both sedan and coupe. That car was brilliant even without tuning it (I did a Dinan tune.) This is a terrible direction to take with the AMG brand. Here they have the opportunity to be the only V8 option on the EU sports car market at entry-levelish similar to BMW with the manual transmission. What a disappointment.
There has to be some sort of fight between the heads of AMG and Daimler on this decision...

im interested to see if they can make it work. they have the f1 tech. best case scenario they take alot of weight off the front axle thanks to getting rid of the v8, and the hybrid assist eliminates the turbo lag.
but yeah honestly i think i'd rather go full EV at that point. no sound is better than crap sound. the only thing the c63 has going for it at this point is the better interior compared to tesla and bmw.

Watch for early build problems with the engine. The M177 had misfires in the E63 when it was introduced. Combined with the failed V/X167 GLE/GLS launch, M-B hasn't had a good run lately.

And I am not criticizing this move - it’s an intriguing direction. The other players will no doubt have to make similar concessions at some point as well. Mercedes just has a head start. |
