Make sure to stop by Lover's and grab a case of lube before going to Carbahn. Just like when the GF hits me up with clothes, makeup, etc sales...20% off overpriced is still overpriced.

He has a PRco extended warranty. Let PRco foot the 20% overpriced bill. Btw, whats a line?

I will absolutely not send the engine to a builder who's many miles away as you have no control over him should things do go bad. It would always be your word against them as shops NEVER EVER take a blame should things do go south

Make sure the replacement engine is healthy (oil analysis), spend $3000 on replacing all the week links including but not limiting to valve stems, RB, TC, the coolant pipes, all hoses, vacuum lines, coils/plugs, thermostat etc

If you are not happy with it sell it but selling with a rebuilt engine sounds terrible from resale point of view especially where it was rebuilt by a shop known to only few internet users

Hope that helps

I wish they'd cover everything. Unfortunately they do their own research and see the market rates are for repair/parts and then counter with an offer to cover that. For my repair they are covering $14,500 out of the $18K(ish) repair. All in all, a great deal for me... But they certainly aren't going to cover more for another shop to do the work.

This is super helpful. Thank you! The list you included of the weak links is precisely what my mechanic and I agree upon, minus the thermostat.

My local shop warranties everything they do for a year, no questions asked, so I'd rather have them do the work than a Ghassan or Jeup, despite having less experience.

Yet another update... I spoke with my mechanic and finally pulled the trigger on getting the used engine and of course, BMW of USA calls me today while I was in a meeting at work. I emailed last week them telling them all about my problem and fairly blatantly asking for help/good will replacement. Their voicemail was extremely friendly and they said they want to help, they just need more info(VIN, miles, ect..). I'm going to give them a call first thing in the morning. I'd be completely shocked if they stepped up and were willing to help in my specific situation, but I figure it's worth the phone call.

dang this thread has me scared, I have also been reading the M5 forums and there seems to be a lot of threads about engines dying.
Ive had my 13 x5m for around 3yrs, from 42k miles to now 80k miles and other than normal maintenance ive had no issue.

Other than PRco insurance what other companies out there cover engine damage?

What’s even more scary is when you change your own oil and see a
bunch of gold glitter on the bottom of the drain pan as this is what im experiencing. Weird things is the engine is running as smooth as ever.
No odd noises, no engine shaking, nothing. I don’t know. For the last 5k miles ive changed the oil like 5 times just to keep an eye on it. But each time, its always the same amount.

Not sure if previous owner put any kind to copper sealer as I’ve been researching on this matter.

Drive the car atleast 2000 miles and send an oil sample to Blackstone lab for an analysis.
Browse their instructions and educate yourself as to what services they offer and what they do. They can analyse the transmission as well as your engine oil and can tell you what elements and in what quantity they are present in the oil.

Click on the sample test in the attached link below to see what the tests would tell you.

They send you a free kit and usually charge around $25-$30/test.

Hope that helps.

I just changed my oil 3 weeks ago and didn't notice anything weird but then again i wasn't really looking, i just ordered more oil from ECS tuning and some liqui moly engine flush, this time around i am going to take a close look.

I talked to PRco insurance yesterday for a quote and the guy told me they dont offer insurance to our cars anymore lol

I got an extended warranty, and looking at the fine print, it does cover internal engine damage, Up to the actual value of the vehicle or 15K (USD), less any previous claim amounts. So, I'm assuming, the motor should be covered if it just up and dies? It wouldn't be greater than that?

This is why ($15,000 cap) I decided to cancel the Carchex, not to mention, one would reach that number real quick if the repair facility used is a BMW repair shop

Ohhh??? 45K!!!!! That's the only warranty that I could get (except for the dealership, which was $6K per year, but would most likely include everything.) Well, I'll be doing my maintenance on time, now, that's for sure!

Yet another update... The used engine the warranty company ordered and I decided to have put in and refurbished turned out to be an N63... So I was back to the drawing board. The options were either a 79K mile used engine with a 30 day warranty + $6K out of pocket or send my engine back to Ghassan for just under $7K out of my pocket. I chose the second.

At this point it's been a month and half since the engine blew so the idea of waiting another month before I get it back is not my favorite, but I think it makes the most sense. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

So what does Ghassan do with the engine?
Ghassan will get the long block and rebuild it. All new gaskets/seals along with balancing the crankshaft and any other adjustments needed to fix damage caused by the rod bearing failure. Once he's done, the engine will come back to my mechanic to be reassembled and installed back in the car. It's quite a process and will require well over 50 hours of labor to make it all happen.
