One step colder spark plugs and ignition coils

Hey guys, I want to swap out my ignition coils as I'm not sure when the last time they were changed out 71k miles.

RealOEM shows two ignition coil part #s: 12138657273 & 12138616153 but I see reference to Bosch 00044X8 (BOS-0221504470) on forums. However I don't see the Bosch ones listed as interchangable with the real oem part # just want to make sure I'm not running sub par coils.

Im also running 3psi over stock boost....maybe I should use one step colder plugs...what are folks using?

Nothing wrong with the old OEM Bosch....but BMW switched to Delphi or maybe Eldor (can't remember at this moment) supposedly improved/better....a little research will nail that down...

I've had bad luck with Bosch and Delphi coils, appears to be alot of fakes out there. There are some threads about fake Delphi coils inducing noise and causing issues. I recommend going with Eldor coils, they are more expensive and worth every penny. As for plugs, go with the NGKs laser iridiums. They are a step or two colder (depending on which one you get) and are awesome. Very expensive on Amazon about 22 each! But you can find them on eBay much cheaper. I myself am running NGK 97506, as I am getting ready to install my jb4 and see how hard you can push a 143 thousand miles n63 with just octane booster...if you see a small thermonuclear cloud in the southwest region of the US, do not be alarmed...it's just me...😄

Running NGK 95770 and BavAuto (RIP) HP coils here. Ran just the plugs with BMS stg1 and added the coils when I went Velos stg2

BMS mentions:
These NGK 5992 Laser Iridium replacement plugs are one step colder than Bosch and are well suited for higher than stock horsepower racing applications. The plug gap must be manually set using a gap tool to the suggested 0.022". The tighter gap and exposed electrode design typically results in fewer misfires at higher power levels than the Bosch plugs. The trade off is a 15-20k mile life span compared to the 20-30k life span of the Bosch plugs. Note NGK has changed their part number for these plugs to 95770. These plugs are compatible with all turbo BMW motors including the N20, N54, N55, S55, and s63tu.

I thought about changing out the coil packs when I got mine 2 months ago at 65K miles but I did not as the car is running like a Champ! I did change out the spark plugs but used the same Bosch OEM spec and still running fine with a stage 1 tune. I honestly think 3 PSI boost over stock is not going to require colder plugs if you just run WOT occasionally. I mean I run 25 PSI over stock using OEM plugs/heat range (NGK Iridiums) with no problems whatsoever, granted it's on another platform.

How do you like the coils? I saw someone mentioned they were made in China, any issues with quality/output? Nevermind, looks like we can't get the coils anymore anyway...

Says s63tu but what about S63?

I'm all for safety but I think you don't need it. 3 PSI boost over stock is not going to get the OEM plug too hot to where it's going to start detonating. The downside to a colder plug when you don't need it is it's not going to get hot enough to where it will be prone to fouling.

Just for the record, reading reviews, the Delphi seem prone to have issues based on reviews. The OEM Bosch seem to fair better.

I had misfires prior to swapping plugs on BMS stg1. Granted I didn't know the age of the oem in the truck.

once changed all was good- I got overboost occasionally.

Bavauto HP coils have been solid- no issues, but yet they are unavailable anymore. I was researching plasma coils too...is that just overkill?

How do you know you had an overboost condition? Are you running a boost gauge or do you data log?

I forget the codes, but they were typical with the ones associated with overboost.

I think the Carly comments mentioned it.

I emailed Terry at BMS, he suggested to run two steps colder which is the normal one for the S63TU (two steps colder for the S63).

Did he happen to provide a plug model that he suggests? NGKs?
