S63B44O0 Reliability

Heyo, I have a 2010 X6 M. Just hit 100k miles. I've been religious with 5k oil changes, replaced every single plastic hose in the engine bay, been meticulous with service etc.

I keep reading about the S63 having piston ring failures which require an engine out rebuild. I keep hearing differing opinions, if it doesn't happen in the first 50k it won't happen and/or it will usually only develop after 100k miles.

My car is running perfectly right now. Not a ton of oil consumption maybe a quart between services. I'm trying to figure out if I should sell this car now while its in tip top shape, or if I'm 'safe' to continue driving it.

Any opinions, help or things to check would be much appreciated!

I can tell you from direct experience, especially from disassembling my motor, this thing is a cash hog. Every damn thing is a fortune. I do have 2nd thoughts. Had I done my research on what everything costs, I would not have done it.

Sell while you can. And the next car you get, do the search on the motor to see what issues it may have and what others have experienced.

I have a 2010 x6m, chain stretched, oil gear broke , oil pump failure, engine seized. Approx 85k on the clock

Had to get another motor , $6k. 2011 x5m donor with trans and transfer case
That donor has 100k on it but looks good from the tear down and from bearing inspection. I'm overhauling everything. Block sleeved, cp carillo pistons, coated main bearings, arrow forged rods, new oil pump, new bolts everywhere, new timing chains, etc etc. Stage 1 overhaul on the heads, all new gaskets. If there's any cash left for the $6k in hoses I'll consider it, but still need to buy new injectors, new oil cooler, etc. Fml

I strong recommend you have your oil pump chain inspected for excessive play. Sofisticated redneck had a nice write up about the chain wearing out prematurely and jumping the gear
