Been a while since I've posted on this beast…127k miles on the odometer now and it's been the most reliable and cheapest to maintain vehicle I've ever owned. It has an ATM intercooler along with swirl flap delete and a new 4x4shop.ca Android dash with wireless carplay. In addition I put a Sutphin transmission tune on a year or more ago which really improved things. Also just got the headlights rebuilt so the light output is fully restored.
Next mods are the Sutphin torque converter and trans kit.

POOR MILEAGE: I did the EGR & DPF delete last year on my 2013 X5 35d. I can confirm that this was indeed as difficult and frustrating as most commented already. I installed the VRSF downpipe/midpipe from ECS Tuning and the Tunezilla stock tune with the EGR delete option.
The problem that I'm seeing is that my fuel mileage is not what I would expect from this effort. I'm getting anywhere from 12-15 mpg for city driving. I can be extremely light footed and with great effort get about 20mpg. Any ideas of where to look? I went to this solution for the mileage and reliability increases and look to only get 1 of these. |

I know driving styles, tire pressure, city/hwy and numerous other factors effect MPG. These are generally shorter trips. Under 5 miles of city driving, so the engine isn't likely completely warm--especially now since it's below freezing in Indianapolis. My reference is my Porsche Cayenne 3.0 TDI with the same DPF/EGR delete that does a lot of the same short trips and gets about 25mpg. Mileage on the X5 is higher--about 200K miles on it compared to 135K on the CD. I know I will get the apples/oranges comment on the engines, but I'd say it's more like comparing an orange to a grapefruit. They shouldn't be THAT different.
I have a Foxwell scanner and am just wondering if there is anything obvious to look for in the vehicle. I don't want to chase my tail on this issue, but if I'm missing something I can measure or test, I'd be happy to do so. |

For contrast, I'm currently on a road trip between Seattle WA and Jackson WY and getting ~28MPG with an average speed of 75. These vehicles just want to be warm and eat up miles. Last edited by jbash87; 02-01-2026 at 03:24 PM.. |
