BMW sent a text with a pic of the new motor(in crate). It just arrived. They are hoping to have it done by the 15th.

is it just a long block, or is it a complete motor, including new turbos and such? I have also installed motors with the block, oil pan, cylinder head, valve cover and turbo, but nothing else, missing intake and injectors, and all associated parts.

I recently had a warrantied motor installed and it did not include the turbos. Though one was shot anyways and was replaced.

Well, its been hurry up and wait. BMW rep told me last week they thought it would be done on the 15th. Talked to the rep on 14th and motor was on the ground below my X-5(on the lift). Spoke with rep yesterday and he thought it might be next week. Said motor was still on ground but tranny, etc was all connected to it.
Rep just texted me a bit ago and said it would be done today and the mechanic needed my permission to drive it 40mi to make sure everything checked out ok. I told him "You bet! He can drive it 100 mi if needed!" I don't want it to have an issue on my 350mi trek home with it. So...as of now....Hurry up and wait.... |

Sorry for the late update. Been sick as a dog since yesterday.
BMW rep said Friday afternoon that my X5 was in the "test drive phase" and would be done sometime this week. Also said they submitted a claim for an axle shaft....Sheesh! Tried calling BMW rep yesterday afternoon and no answer. He texted this morning stating that it will be ready for pickup tomorrow(wed). I can't go get it till Thursday. Its slowly inching closer. Oh, they did verify that the N63 "Customer Care Package" has been done to my X-5 already, so thats good to know. Once again...Hurry up and wait... |

With the new engine the truck value is probably worth more than what you paid. The F15 is a much better vehicle and engine. Maybe the dealership would consider taking your x5 as a trade. Might be worth asking. |

Probably makes a lot of sense what Beachcomberx5 is suggesting.
I had been in the market for an X5. I opted not to. The reason was that when we looked at service records for each vehicle we were interested in all had tons of repair/warranty work performed. Our budget and the model we liked had us looking at vehicles just out of warranty as we wanted a 2013. Each vehicle had an average of 15-20 visits to the shop over the 4 years they had been on the road. Some of the visits were for normal servicing like oil changes but other visits were for repairs. So either we were going to be buying a vehicle that was going to be in the shop an average of 4 times a year or as most dealers told us, anything that has gone wrong has already been fixed. The fact that you have a brand new engine is almost irrelevant. It will be in the shop an average of 4 times a year. Twice for oil changes, brake pads, something leaking, low battery discharge warning, turbos etc... I'm not sure if Jiggz or bmwx5er have weighed in here but these guys are very knowledgeable and helpful. Also they might potentially have a buyer for you as they are always on the lookout helping others find vehicles. You may want to reach out to them directly for advice but I'm sure they will get notified now that I have tagged their user names here. |

I will probably do my best to get out of it. What stinks is that the X5 is what i really want and i would be quite happy keeping it as long as i had some reasonable expectation that it would not be plagued with issues. At the moment i'm not feeling it....

Well, i picked up my X5 today. Logged right at 300mi on the drive back. Averaged 22.8 over entire drive. Never got over 2000rpm. Varied rpm/load for first 50 or so miles, all interstate driving after that. Climbed somewhere around 1500ft from start to finish and was somewhat hilly. Was very easy with the throttle even climbing the hills. I really like this vehicle. Have some traveling to do over the next 3 days and will be taking it, so we shall see how it does. Will be putting close to 250 miles on it each day in two stints. Looks like i'll be doing an oil change maybe next weekend.
