Yoou can go to the NHTSA site and query their database against your car's VIN. Mine shows the D/S recall due (+ another for airbag); build date 1-Oct-2010.

With all the failures documented they would not me able to make it hold in court if it got that far. But legally they need to prove it caused the failure before they can deny a claim. Also find a new dealer! Some have no problem with aftermarket stuff. My mini had 18" wheels on it and my sunroof broke they tried to deny my warranty claim because of the wheels, after pushing them for proof that it caused the issue and mini coopers could be bought with 18" wheels anyhow they lamented and ended up covering everything. The service director their was a ass hat and was later removed anyway. |

Just got mine back today from Knauz BMW in Lake Forest after performing the recall repair. The tech told the SA that my existing front driveshaft looked brand new. Oh well!

It just happened to me on a 2013 x5 50i over the weekend.
Unfortunately, I missed the memo on drive shafts - and apparently so did my BMW store because I had them look the vehicle over a few months back when they were handling an unrelated issue just to ensure I was up to date and had no oddball recall (or "pseudo-recall" items still yet to be repaired. With the exception of the airbag recall (that they don't have parts to repair yet), they made it clear I was up to date and good to go... They didn't say a word about potential driveshaft issues. So imagine my surprise when I was calmly rolling along flat and level at highway speed in my just barely out of warranty BMW when WHAM, it sounded like a gun went off, then all hell broke loose under the vehicle. The driveshaft broke at the U-joint. It sheared right off and smashed the hell out of the underside of the vehicle, then successfully impaled itself into the transmission (literally embedded itself into the transmission). I've never seen anything like it... Until I googled x5 driveshafts and saw that the u-joint on these things apparently is prone to breaking clean off. BMW is talking about damage north of thirty thousand dollars (over twenty grand just in parts alone), and possibly more if the engine itself took a beating - he says if it's damaged they'll have to swap the whole motor. It's crazy how much damage this thing did as it swung around down there. Thankfully, they're covering the whole repair under warranty (I guess they extended the warranty on the driveshaft to 120,000 miles). They assure me the vehicle will be better than new when they're finished with it... I know BMW is talking about this being an issue on 2011 and older e70 x5, but I'm telling you this - if you have an E70 X5 of any vintage you should probably have BMW check out the driveshaft before you end up stuck in the middle of nowhere with tranny fluid pouring out the bottom of your prized ride... Here's a picture of the driveshaft: |

Why did the recall campaign for the front driveshaft only apply to X5M vehicles produced between April 5, 2010 and November 20, 2010 (see link below) when there are vehicles produced after November 20, 2010 that have experienced issues?

How does this recall list work - does this mean the recall never applied to my VIN, or does it get closed and drop off when the recall/repair is performed?

Same as me. Only open recall shows the airbag. No driveshaft, and no fuel pump...yet.
