Congrats on the mods and preventive care. Attention to detail is amazing.
I have a 2012 X5 35D. Would you mind doing a quick write up on changing the vacuum hoses? I started with DIY myself couple of months ago when the dealer charged me $1000 for a rear brake job. Ended up doing oil change, air filter change, cabin filter, rear brakes and refilled the DEF. So totally new to DIY but very interested in learning more about my X5 and saving some money Thanks again Subbu |

Rear Brake Refresh
Still letting the lowering springs settle so I decided to tackle the rear brakes. In similar fashion as the fronts, the rear calipers were disassembled, stripped, blasted, primed then painted. Its a long process but the results speak for themselves. The difference this time is that I decided to use VHT paint instead as the G2 caliper paint I had leftover from doing the fronts went bad. As for the pads, I went with Akebono Euros and so far I'm liking them. Very little dust and the braking performance feels good with only slightly less initial bite. Overall very pleased and now that my front and rear brakes are done, I'm very tempted to install the 599M rep wheels. Just wanted to provide an update to the Vogtland springs after they have had months to settle. Surprisingly the measurements have not changed since shortly after installing:
Vogtland (Preliminary) Right Front: 30.75" Right Rear: 30.50" Left Front: 30.75" Left Rear: 30.50" Vogtland (Settled) Right Front: 30.75" Right Rear: 30.50" Left Front: 30.75" Left Rear: 30.50" I'll be cleaning up the car this weekend and will try to get some pics. Essentially the front is the same as Eibach but the rear is definitely lower. I'm looking to find a set of H&R 1.2" to test next. |

Great write up and information thread!
I really respect all the work that you put into this car. I also have the same X5d and I'm considering keeping it a little longer. Just approaching 160k but still going strong, really haven't had any major issues but I think I will tackle the engine stuff soon and clean it up. Actually maybe I'll do a write up too since I've done some stuff others would possibly want to see. Anyways, great work! All the best! |

'Diluted Simple Green' is that much like Meguiars All-Purpose cleaner? I have gallons of that stuff and Meguiars Super-Degreaser to hand. I'll try and do some before/afters on my own thread. Just looking for a few pointers |

Well I ran another test while I was on the highway giving the folks a tour of Texas and decided to watch my temps for an hour long drive. Part of the trip was through Hill Country but overall temps averaged around 76-79 doing about 80mph with the A/C blasting on a warm 90+ degree day. Priced out a bunch of parts to the tune of about $500 to do a full overhaul of pump, thermostat, tensioner, belts and few other odds and ends. Going to try a new parts source as everything was genuine BMW and $100 cheaper than the popular resources we see on the forums.

Whoa!
I stumbled across this thread researching a vacuum leak on my M57 35D. Great write up, props to your attention to detail. I'm a first time BMW owner and love my X5 35D. Thanks for posting up the details on your vacuum line replacement.

Primary interested in ( when compared to stock ) - dust rate - any significant bite differences - noise, if any - part numbers ( mine is 2013 E70 35d LCI ) While I am less OCD-ed about unpainted / rusted rotors and calipers, but OEM brake dust drives me nuts. |

Dust is a lot less but you’ll still have some. I’d say in terms of dust and initial bite these are in between your typical low dust aftermarket pad and that of the OEM. These definitely have more bite than other aftermarket pads and this is the reason I bought them. I feel like they are an all around good compromise to OEM.

Hey man. I know it’s been a while since you had the X5 but I just had a quick suspension question. With all the spring replacements you tried, did you ever buy new shocks/struts to go along with them? Btw, your PM box is full
